If you could never cruise again, what would you do in place of it?

Recommended Posts

We have a Motorhome and an airplane. The airplane cruises ar 200 mph so can make Vegas in 1:15 from home. Have a friend that picks us up and have lunch, 5 hrs in the Motorhome. Lots to see on the West coast if you stay away from the coast crowds are not bad. Even when cruising we always did a 30 day trip annually in the Motorhome. We are 7 states shy of seeing them all. Have fun

When we were newly married my husband was building hours for his commercial pilots license. The cheapest way was to hire a little 172 four seater  in Waterloo Canada for two weeks and fly to Banff where our friend met us, we did that twice and had some hair raising adventures. He only has minimum hours for his private licence the first time. The  confidence of youth

Have "land yacht"...AKA motor home to use.   Just completed A1A (Florida east coast) crawl up the coast staying in B&Bs and actually CRUISED!!  Yup, took the 10 minute ride on the St. John's car ferry (connection of A1A) from Mayport to Ft. George Island.  😉

Have 4 weeks in Alaska booked starting August 1st.  Last two weeks are now booked in a cabin in Homer AK that replaced B2B Radiance cruise.

Several time share weeks to use up, and 3 different weeks of condos booked for Panhandle of Florida in Sept./Oct.

Still remember Silver Springs boat tour.   We have a travel trailer and go back to Florida at least once a year - we like the Saint Augustine area (North Beach camp ground) or the state parks.  My scuba diving club in Miami used to go camping every 'winter' when the water was less than 80 degrees.  We'd have a meeting every year to plan out the places to go (reservations at state parks at least 11 months in advance or forget it!) especially in the Keys.  We've been to Rainbow Springs, Wekiwa Springs, Blue Spring, any place where there is water.  Lake Kissimmee, Myaka State Park, Peace River, gosh there are so many places. But, since we moved to South Carolina, we're enjoying discovering all the state parks here and in Georgia.  Georgia has some good parks for hurricane evacuation (which we've had to do 4 times out of the 5 years we've lived here- go figure!).

Ditto to that!  Love all those Start Parks you mentioned!  We were actually in Silver Springs state park campground when they made the decision to close all the Florida state park campgrounds in March.

Have Wekiva booked for a stay in September, plus another in Lake Louisa.  My favorite is still Grayton Beach state park (which was cancelled for our stay in early April), while Bucky loves Curry Hammock in the Keys.  🙂

Yep, in Ocala, right off 200.

Plan is summer at beach, winter in Ocala

Works for us

It does get a bit nippy in Ocala in the winter.  Hope you bought some nice winter coats!  😉  I miss camping in Silver Springs state park...great kayaking on the river!

Buy a condo on Mackinac Island!

Too much horse poop and fudge smells.  😉

Just kidding, I loved visiting Mackinac island every summer.  Born and raised Michigander here.

Curry Hammock State Park.....LOVE IT!!! Especially site number 7. Close to the water, long  site,  We also liked Long Key State Park--if you can get a reservation- seems like it's always full.  Where is Grayton Beach?  Haven't heard of that one.

Land trips are not always cheaper....we usually cruise for about $150 pp per day. A nice hotel or B and B and food and gas puts you right about there. For us it's about the same.

Right now my work won't let me go to Florida, or Arizona. Every time I come with a land trip idea (grand Canyon, the Keys) work adds them to the quarantine list. With states added to the list all the time I'm thinking we'll be staying in Texas this fall.  Not my first choice as we've already seen alot of the state but will attempt to enjoy some small inns and B and Bs that are new to us.

Land trips are  not a bad alternative but we will really miss the evenings on a ship. Happy hours aren't quite the same when you're paying for each drink and driving, no one to chat with at dinner and no entertainment.

By all means if you're not limited get out there and see the USA.  Our country is big and beautiful!

That's for sure!!  Just finished up a week of touring the east coast of Florida, staying in B&Bs on the way up to Jekyll Island.  Adding up the stays and food at restaurants...yikes!!  And we were using our own vehicle...no rental.  Cost twice as much as a week of cruising!  😮

Actually the campground in Long Key has been closed for some time now.  First they were redoing the shoreline, then the hurricane hit.  I don't think the campground will ever reopen.  Day use is still there.

Grayton Beach is just east of the Destin area in the Panhandle.  South of Tallahassee.  Beautiful park right on the coast, with one of the most gorgeous beaches I have ever seen.  Clear aquamarine water, powdered sugar soft beach sand.  That one is one of the hardest parks to get a reservation.

Go to National Parks

I believe you have a choice of over 400 to choose from.  🙂  Would be so cool to see every one of them.  I think there was an article about an older lady that did make it to them all.  What a great life she got to live!

OMG, We love Jekyll Island -but  the campground at the north end is always crowded.  We were there last February.  Absolutely love the food at the Driftwood Inn.  We're camping at Blythe Island county park next October so we can drive over to St Simons.

Another place we haven't been to yet.

Have indeed stayed at Blythe Island park in the past, as our one night on the way up and then on the way back from spending summer in Maine.  But the last few years we are finding much easier as in and out at Coastal RV.  Big concrete pull through sites.

We love upscale all inclusive like sandals, better food than mdr, they include upscale drinks , no tipping.

Sounds great.  Never been there.  However the thought of getting in an airplane at the present time scares me.

I"m a nurse at a large hospital.   I have to report if I leave the state due to Covid.

Cruiselvr4, How does work know what you do and where you go on your time? Been retired for 15 years so things must be different.

I do think it's not really fair.  I'm perfectly capable of self monitoring or am willing to be tested upon our return.   We can go to Houston which is an even hotter spot then Dallas and not report it.  They can't tell us we can't leave the state of course. But they can tell us we can't return to work for 2 weeks after we return.  And that quarantine time is on us, either PTO or no pay. They will not test us to clear us.  A few have not self reported but if you're caught it could be grounds for termination.  Since I dont want to "waste" 2 weeks of PTO i just won't leave the state.

We're totally leisure people retired so we can do anything.  Rock and Roll Hall of fame is at the TOP of the list plus a lot of favorite places like Charleston SC, Asheville Inn on Biltmore once they open up completely.  Maybe Dollywood in Tennessee.  Maybe  back to Disney World which we love.  Lots of fun places to visit over and over again.  We've had vacation homes  in the past and it's really been a big fat pain in the neck for me as far as I'm concerned.. Too much cleaning involved so I'm very happy to rent a place and let them do the cleaning!! Also will we may join our local country club once it's fully open. I would love to cruise again and have many future reservations and hope they all come true but lots of things to do if it's a dead end.

I'm checking out all inclusives.  I'd love it but DH loves gambling, which is why a cruise is so good for us -- stuff that both of us like to do.  We could do Vegas but you don't get the value for money that you get from a cruise and all inclusives.

Some of the all inclusive do have casinos we did hard rock in Puerto Plato which had a huge casino, huge resort, but food was better in Sandals, but did win several hundred on last day there.

I looked at this a few weeks and brought pics home for Lisa to see. I do a fair amount of business with the dealership it is at, so I got the tour. I would not be opposed to packing up and travelling across North America if cruises never sailed again but Lisa said “unless it comes with a cook and housekeeping she’s out”. Followed quickly by “you can’t go with out me”. 😂

It only has 600 total miles, the trailer is a brand new and 32’ long. It is built on a Freightliner truck chassis and is fully loaded.  Two slide outs, exterior TV, awning, automotive levelling jacks, etc.  Unfortunately the gentleman that bought it had a change in life, with his wife having health issues, and can no longer travel in retirement. He got it home, and never took a single trip in it. Very sad and unfortunate.
