I know if we could go back to Australia, we'd jump at the chance....been to Cairns both by 🚢 and ✈.Last time we picked up a car and drove to sites..1st time driving a 🚘 on the 'other' side.😯🤓

Thank you for this map! It’s always easier for me to visualize locations if I’ve been there and sadly, I have not been to Australia.  Now I can see where Cairns is in relation to the other wonderful places people talk about.

Our first stop was at Barron Falls...

 

But due to little rainfall beforehand the falls were pretty sparse...

 

But we all enjoyed the stop anyway...

 

 

Unfortunately, this was my view from my appointed seat in the railcar...

 

 

 

 

At this point I'd had enough of being inside so I stepped between the two rail cars to take photos out the left and right side.  You had to be very careful though.  This is the view at my feet.  The metal plates can rotate a little so you had to keep your feet out of the way.

Sometimes all I had to see were trees, but other times I saw things like this...

Eventually on the flat land...

 

At the end we stopped at Freshwater Station, where we got off.

 

Back on the bus for our ride back to the ship.  It was a fun day and I'm glad I went.  These days DH doesn't go on every tour with me as he prefers to relax on the ship.  It works for us to split up for a few hours so I can see what's around our ports of call.

When we arrived at the office, we  were  told the train was not running and we would go by bus. We declined because we so enjoy the scenic train rides. So, we just spent the very hot day strolling around town. Loved the open lovely pool!

You're welcome.  Planning a cruise used to be such a normal activity.  I'm very much out of practice due to all the cancellations we've had.  I wonder if my CC friends are still in business with the cruise ships not coming to visit?  Maybe I should try to check in with them and see what's up.  I hope your cruise is a go!!

Yes, the train ride is much more fun than a bus ride.  That is if you can get up and take photos like I did.  Only the people on the "port" side at the window had good views.  Here is the ticket they gave me, indicating seat 10, not the window seat.

Good morning all! (Let’s see if this posts this morning?!?)

 

Thanks to all of you who keep this Daily going. I love celebrating with you all, as well as commiserating when health problems, big disappointments and little annoyances slam us. So I’m starting this post off with 🙏. And I’ll raise a 🍷in celebration, but not for breakfast 😂.

 

I appreciate our local American Legion; they have a very nice hall they rent out to our community. I’ve attended quite a few events there. They serve drinks from their bar and while they don’t do Negronis, they do make a darn good Amaretto Sour for $2!

 

I collect rocks on every trip. I have glass bowls of them decorating just about every room. My favorite is a fairly large, flat, smooth one that my husband got me by wading out into the freezing cold water of Lake Superior when I saw it in the waves. True love. (DH not the rock 😉). 
 

My DS has what I call her “his, mine and ours” family. All boys, blended. 
 

Love the quote, didn’t realize it was from Cicero.  In fact it’s surprising how many quotes I know,  but misattribute them. It’s sort of like people quoting the Bible except it turns out to be something from Shakespeare!

 

Haven’t been to today’s destination. Bring on the pictures. 

 

DH fell on our patio and has a banged up knee and shoulder. Didn’t break anything, but bruised and feeling the pain. He had a 2 hour dental visit scheduled this morning which we cancelled, but couldn’t reschedule until the end of October. 
 

I was extremely lazy yesterday, which means I’m really way behind on my to-do list so off to my desk to hopefully accomplish a few things.

I’m not a regular poster, but am a regular reader of the Daily.

 

 I am heading to the airport for a flight to Italy where I will be boarding a Uniworld vessel for a cruise out of Venice.  This past week has been an adventure trying to determine EXACTLY what is needed to enter Italy and then to re-enter the US.  I’ve sent emails to Family and Friends letting them know about my trip.  I feel that the folks on the Daily are now among my circle of friends.

 

I will try to read the Daily while I am gone so I can continue prayers for all those who need them.  I doubt that I will find the time to post.  Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Good luck on your trip.  I hope you enjoy it immensely.  We have family going on a Uniworld Milan to Venice cruise Oct. 8.  Not sure I'd be ready yet to cruise especially with all the tests and documentation needed.

As I recall, we had booked whatever they called their "first" class ticket. I  think it was our anniversary............so long ago.

Good morning from sunny central Texas.  I'm a little late today, but earlier than I've been the last couple of days.  I needed a few things from the store and wanted to go when it was not crowded.

 

I'll salute the American legion.  We don't collect rocks, but still have some from when we were polishing rocks with the DDs many, many years ago.  Both DH and I had stepmothers, but we were already married when our father's remarried after the deaths of our mothers.  Our stepmothers were the only grandmothers the DDs knew.  We were very lucky since our stepmothers were wonderful, especially to our fathers.

Will pass on the meal and the drink.  I would like to try the wine, but it might be drier than I like, but at least it is not a sweet Riesling.

 

@kazu  Hope Jose is feeling better today.  Glad your BFF's DH is making good progress, and that all goes well with the visit to the surgeon.

We were in Cairns once in 2002 on the APEC cruise on the Volendam.  As per our usual habit, we rented a car.  We drove north to Kuranda and then further north to Port Douglas.  Many of my pictures are of the rainforest and streams, but there are a few from each stop, plus a few of Cairns.  Most of the ones of Cairns were taken from the ship.

 

These are from our drive to Kuranda through the rainforest.  Barron Falls was also dry in 2002, so they must not have had much rain then either.

The sailway down the channel to the ocean was interesting.  We were about a quarter mile down the channel, when Captain Peter Harris got a call from Medical that a passenger needed to go to the hopital.  The ship backed down the channel to the dock.  Captain Harris told us later that it was easier and quicker to back the ship up than to turn it around.

My thoughts today are with our friend, @irishjim. He had successful surgery for his skin cancer but now has to deal with some difficult effects. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Hi everyone!

 

Today started with good news as overnight we received an email from HAL to say that we have been given a boarding time for our October 6th cruise.  Group B, 1.20pm. We are happy with that and if it changes to a later time, guess which boarding pass will be produced at check in? 😇

Time to head up to the attic and retrieve the emotional baggage from its hideaway of the last 20 months.

We also got rid of DW's little run around car.  It was 15 years old but only had 80,000kms (50,000mls) on it.  We have decided that running two cars is unnecessary and wasteful, so we waved goodbye to her little Terios. 

DW is suffering side effects from her zoledronic acid infusion.  Chills and a temperature with bone pain.  Hopefully it will ease in the next 24 hours.

@Quartzsite Cruiserthank you for your photos and discussion.  Amazing how these Captains can back a huge ship up a channel, while I inch backwards in the car with a back up camera to help.  😁

 

You mentioned Port Douglas being nearby to Cairns.  We actually stopped in Port Douglas on a 2013 Australia cruise on Diamond Princess.  As I recall we got off the ship and walked a little way through town then over to Four Mile Beach.  PD was not nearly the size of Cairns.  It was a gloomy day so the beach didn't look very inviting.

I'm sorry your wife is feeling poorly today.  I too hope the pain will ease soon.  Also, I hope your cruise getaway that's coming up will help her forget about the latest side effects from her infusion.🚢

Good morning, Dailyites!  Thank you to everyone, and for the Care and Celebrations lists, the food and drinks, and all the pictures to bring back memories.

 

We went to Australia in 2010 to visit Pat's sister and family in Perth, then we did a little wandering and visited  3 sets of friends in eastern Australia.  We went to Cairns and Port Douglas on our own, we flew there from Perth, and then took the train back to Brisbane and Sydney.   We did the first class train to Kuranda, it was amazing, there was only one other passenger in the car and the conductor plied us with food and drink.  Comfortable swivel chairs.   So I will post some pictures of that - most of my others are repeats of the previous.  We also visited the bird place in Kuranda, you could buy little bags of goodies for the birds, with cookies, corn, seeds etc., in the bag, and the birds knew exactly which bit they wanted, they would put their heads in and take out what they wanted (the cookies went first).  Also we visited an alligator (croc?) and koala place.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cairns itself, I remember, we really enjoyed our few days there - so much I didn't take any pictures!  I remember the huge fruit bats used to come in to roost in the trees, and the citizens were talking about cutting the trees down as they didn't like the mess.  I thought the bats were amazing.

 

We also went to Port Douglas and took a boat out to see the reef.
