Royal Caribbean starving crew members

Recommended Posts

Currently on the second leg of a b2b on Grandeur of the Seas. Just found out from crew why they won't come back to this ship on their next contract. There is no food available to crew after 11:30 pm. They go to bed hungry.

All closing bar staff casino and workers have nothing to eat after 11:30. Unless you have snack food stashed in your cabin.

I find this totally unacceptable and am absolutely livid about this situation.

When I get home emails and phone calls will be made by me to Royal about this.

The crew is what makes your company money. How dare you as a company treat your employees like this.

I'm on Grandeur again in February and will be bringing food( dry noodles) to help the crew get through the night.

We as passengers need to speak up to defend the crew members that we know and love that go the distance to take such good care of us.

Take action!

Otherwise your favorite crewmember may leave you and Royal forever!

Sounds like crew tugging at your heart strings for extra tips.
This story is patently false

I can see it now.  Instead of one extra suitcase full of rubber ducks, it'll now be a 2nd extra suitcase full of ramen noodles.  😉

I would appreciate that being hidden around the ship VS rubber ducks. 🙂

There is no contractual requirement to have food available when a crew member goes off shift.  Deck and engine officers and crew who stand bridge and engine room watches will have a schedule like 12 noon to 4pm, and 12 midnite to 4 am.  Is there food available for these people at 4am?  Nope, even if you had a meal hour at midnight.  You adjust your personal routine to the work routine of the ship.  Done it for decades.  The crew mess halls serve 4 meals a day.  If a crew member cannot work out how to get 3 square meals a day when 4 are served, that doesn't bode well for their careers at sea.  I suspect that this complaint came from a first time crew, who has not adjusted to life at sea.

Next, what do you want?  They serve a "nite meal" at 10:30 to 11:30, and then the galley staff have to clean up.  Should they provide another meal for the galley staff who would have to clean up after your later meal?  Who then cleans up after this?  Or do the galley staff go to bed hungry?  Or do we just have the crew mess open 24 hours a day?

Thanks Chief for explaining how behind the scenes work.

I follow a social media group that is Crew postings and this issue of "no food" has never been mentioned, and it covers all major lines and ships located around the world.  I would think that if this was an actual issue it would have been come up over the last 5 years I've been a member. Sounds more like a crew member with poor time management or looking to pull at heart strings.

For those interested in loading up a suitcase for these staff members currently starving...

I'm going to bring an extra suitcase full of these instead of extra tips. Instead of two $1 bills with my drink order I'm going to hand a noodle package with my seapass card.  I'm sure my favorite bartender will enjoy 5 of these on day 7 more than an extra $20 bill I usually hand out on the last night.

The Crew Mess is probably one of the most important areas onboard for the crew. It is like a large dining hall where everyone can get their breakfast, lunch, dinner and even midnight snack. It isn’t always open with food but often if the crew are hungry they can enjoy some pastry snacks along with tea, coffee, and juices.

In the crew mess, there will usually be a large TV where members can come together and watch sports. Even in the later hours of the night, this area can be full of activity as the crew head on down to eat after long days shift. One of the best times to eat in the mess is at midnight, it is when food not used in the guest dining rooms head on down to the crew, this could include the extremely iconic Carnival Chocolate Melting Cake! It can be the best time to go to the mess and a time when fellow workers can come together and discuss their day.
