The Fleet Report and Daily for Monday July 31st, 2023

Good afternoon from a hot, 104F, and sunny central Texas.  I'm now inside until close to sunset, when it will be cooler, think mid to upper 90s, but no sun.  It feels good to have a clean house, for now at least.  The first load of towels has been folded and put away.  The second load which is the cleaning towels and rags is in the dryer.  Otherwise, not much going on around here.

As of six hours ago, according to Texas A&M Forest Service, the wildfire is now 95% contained with just a few interior areas still burning, but not a threat to the containment.  They will continue to keep an eye on the fire though.  I think this will be my last fire report.

Our county and several others are now under burn bans.  So far as I know, we are not under water restrictions, so our grass is watered at night when there is less chance of evaporation.  The areas where we didn't plant grass are getting browner and drier by the day.  The only good thing about that is there is less grass to mow in this hot weather.

Thank you for today’s R & D, Rich! What a stunning morning here! A perfect ending to a very quick visit. I am sitting at the gate ready to board. Yesterday was just as spectacular. It was 59F when I left for the “big city”. I met my friends for lunch at Smith & Wollensky across from the Tea Party Ship & Museum.

And we were a bit early, so we got to hear the Museum guides lead the visitors through a reenactment of the insurrection! Lunch was lovely, and since we were celebrating two birthdays, the birthday girls got to choose a dessert off the menu - on the house!

The entire meal was spectacular. And it was lovely to be able to sit outside.

After lunch, we walked the Rose Kennedy Greenway. My first visit. This spectacular park was created after a major thruway was placed underground.

I picked up a new headband for my workouts. Lots of kids, dogs, butterflies and just a wonderful way to walk off lunch. After a three hour “tour”, we headed back to where I parked the car. Then I dropped them off at the train station. One heading to Portland Maine on Amtrak. And the other heading to Gloucester on the T.

I dropped the rental car off & then Ubered to the North End to meet the family for dinner.  My driver had a Tesla. My first ride in one. Very interesting. My driver had to show me how to use the door handle.

😜 The North End traffic was as crazy as I remember it. But the food was as good as I remember. I had some Antipasti, and shared a dessert. I was still fairly full from lunch. Then back to my Nephew & his DW’s place in Charlestown, to chill a little bit before bed. It was nice enough to sit outside. We could hear some fireworks, but could not see the source from their rooftop deck. But the view of the moon made up for it.

This morning my Nephew dropped us off after a 15 minute, stress free ride. 😎

Vanessa, thank you for keeping up with us. It will be good to be home.

Ann, I hope you had a safe flight today.  Thank you for the pictures, and I'm glad the birthday celebration and the family dinner were fun.

Good morning friends!  It's s beautiful sunny day as the Zaandam heads to Sydney, Nova Scotia today.  A little cool but soon these temps will feel warm as the days get colder around Greenland and Iceland.  Thank you Rich @richwmn for our Daily and Fleet Report!

Today we have a 3 and 4 star Mariner reception in the Crow's Nest at 11 am.  Then at 1 pm the Cruise Critic roll call meet and greet in Explorer's Lounge.  So far things are going smoothly here on the ship and I hope to keep it that way.  Maybe we could have a Dive In burger for lunch today to honor this day.  And perhaps some watermelon, though an ice cream cone is my preferred dessert.  Yum!

Lenda @Quartzsite Cruiser I will do the links and photos on Wednesday for you if you wish.  I can manage doing that a few times if needed but can't always be 100% sure I can do it so appreciate your help while I'm away.  Hoping internet is working well that day!

Extra prayers for Lou, Baby Murphy, Chuck and Maureen's DH this week.  And for any others who need them know I include all my Daily friends, my DB and friend's DB Mark.  Thanks to Vanessa @JazzyV, Tina @0106, Dixie @summer slope, and Ann @cat shepard for continuing your work making the Daily what it is!

Thanks to all for the silly memes each day!  DH and I almost choked laughing at the 34 year old Escort one Lenda!  Smiling is good for us all.  Have a great day out there!

Sandi, thank you for offering to do the links Wednesday.  I hate for you to have to interrupt your vacation, but appreciate the offer.  We'll need to leave between 7 and 7:30 am, and I don't think I'll have time to look for the links and get everything ready in time, even though I plan to get some things done Tuesday night.  When DH read your comment about the 34 year old escort, he asked me what it was about.  Somehow, he had missed that meme.

We did get the expected call with DH’s surgery time tomorrow- 12:20 with 11:20 arrival. Very relieved!  Once in the mountains house we had a 0530 check-in, had to arrange to come the day before. This setup should be easy!

Blessings for Baby Murphy and family. And Terry and Lou, and Annie and Chuck. And all in need of healing, comfort or hope. And Terri’s AC!  Thanks everyone for being here with all your support.

Smooth travels to all away, and cheers to those celebrating 🥂

I was at the Dangerfield Club once in NY. I like avocados and watermelon but not together. We were in Recife 2013. It was impressively hot!  I think that was when I realized I couldn’t enjoy an Amazon River cruise.

Thanks for all the beautiful pictures!  Have a great day everyone. m—

Maureen, I hope everything goes well for you DH's surgery tomorrow, and for a quick recovery, with the same good results as the first surgery.

Good morning everyone,

It's been a busy few days here. Today is my son's 47th birthday and we did a late lunch/early dinner yesterday. The menu was Spinach and Ham Enchiladas and sopapillas. Another friend joined DS, DDIL and myself and it worked out well. It was my first teary day yesterday in quite a while. I really missed DH and I guess it's because it was the first occasion we were celebrating without him. I'm strong and my eyes only leaked occasionally so that's good.

I'll be on a BHB in 5 weeks so looking forward to it. A new experience cruising alone but it's the Westerdam and the same ports we've been to numerous times so no pressure to go, go, go.

Off to get ready and head in for water aerobics this morning and then a couple of errands.

Have a good day everyone!

Karen

Karen, you are entitled to get teary now and then.  Please wish your DS a VERY HAPPY 47TH BIRTHDAY for us.  I agree with @kazu Jacqui, that you are a very strong person.

Good morning a bit late. I have been up for about 4 hours, but just now getting to take a break. Temps are a bit more comfortable... it was 54F when dogs and I walked very early and highs today are forecast for high 80's. We did get one really good hard rain yesterday evening.... it did not last long but was very welcome.

Food all sounds good.... and I have been to Recifie twice. First time on the Amsterdam, second time on the Princendam. Nice pictures. I went to Olinda on the first cruise. Don't remember what happened on the second... I may have stayed on board with a cold.

Diane's service is this afternoon and I have to find something to wear. My wardrobe is pretty limited since I have lost weight. Will also check on the cats later this afternoon. My downstairs neighbor reminded me rather firmly that I can not handle a cat. I know she is right. I am hoping I can get them moved to a more comfortable situation.... the shelter is  just over full at the present time, both dogs and cats. There are 2 really cute dachshunds there... fairly young ... and no takers. Shows how slow adoptions are just now.

Need to get myself organized. I have a podiatrist appointment early tomorrow morning with a new doctor and they want a list of my current meds.  I am really having trouble getting comfortable shoes and need to get the problem with a couple toes straightened out. And I would like to be able to walk comfortable on the Grand Australia.

Take care all. Best wishes to baby Murphy. Hugs to all who need them and keep your feet down and your head up.

Susan

Susan, sending positive thoughts for strength for you as you attend Diane's service.  I hope someone adopts her cats soon.  The two young dachshund sound enticing, but right now is not a good time for us to adopt a dog, much less two .  I hope the podiatrist has some easy solutions for you foot problem.

Good morning all!

All of our pets have been mutts, will pass on the avocado and even the watermelon.  We just had the fish burgers last night (good!) so will pass on the juicy hamburger meal too.  Also pass on the drink and wine.  I sound like a party-pooper! And have never been to Reclife or even to Brazil.  😂

We're having another beautiful, mild summer day, I'll probably spend most of it gardening.  DH is working today and tomorrow at the Mariner games, so I'm on my own for dinner.  I plan to take some leftovers out of the freezer and just relax.

I'm fighting off a summer cold (doesn't feel like Covid but will check in a day or two).

I hope you all have a great day.  Continued prayers for sweet baby Murphy.

Carolyn, I hope you feel better soon, and that the test is negative.

While the proton therapy did work two years ago, it's not an option this time around.  This doc is also suggesting  immunotherapy.  So far that is two out 3 that he will listen to.  The next doc we see is the oncologist that he has had for years,.  At first he was all gung  ho to suggest the chemo, but when we met with the PA two weeks ago, he too had changed his mind.  Perhaps DH didn't qualify for the treatment, too old, had cancer too long...  who knows.

DH did get a job assignment this morning.  Yeah!  Austin Opera.  Starts Wednesday.  His tests seem to have been rescheduled for another date.  All of this is making us a bit nervous that we will have to cancel the Italy and Greece cruise.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

Annie, I'm glad your DH got a job and with the Austin Opera.  I'm glad he wants to work, as that will help keep his mind off his problems.  I hope they find a therapy for him that works, and from what I've read, they see to get good results from the immunotherapy.  I hope your back and arm are feeling better.

Good Monday everyone!

The WE was kind of busy, thank goodness the weather was practically perfect!

Thank you again for all of the contributors here, where would we be here without your generosity of your time and heart?

Not a watermelon fan, any type of melon really; I think it is a texture thing for me.

I do like a nice mutt, they usually have great personalities which makes them adorable.😉

Love avacados, will have them for a snack by themselves...yum!

@cruising sister, so glad sweet baby Murphy is healing nicely and getting stronger. I hope the infection has totally cleared. Welcome to MN!

The weather here as been great the last few days, great to enjoy outside, but we are back into the oven this Wednesday and Thursday, so they say. Not used to so many very hot days here.

Good news for me - I had to renew my Passport because it would have expired within 6 months time when I go on the AUS/NZ GV this coming January. I got the news that it has been shipped....I was so excited I almost cried, I did tear up. LOL.  My horror would have been having the trip all planned and paid for and no Passport. I sent in in the end of June, they received it Jun 26th; it is 5 weeks today. I should receive it this week. I told my TA that I was going to send it in in August, she recommended doing in June because of the lengthy time it was taking to get them back. I'll be relieved when I have it in hand.😎

Prayers for us all and will do another round of the beads today for everyone dealing with dr's appts, treatments and struggling with health. It is a tough, stressful road for the person and anyone who loves them.

Take good care all! 😊

Good Afternoon,  thanks for today's report.  Its another beautiful day and the ac rest continues. It was a very busy day at work, nearly 400 emails and conference calls regarding one project lasted 4 hours.  I'll pass on avocados but wouldn't mind a burger and watermelon.

This piece was the problem for Zaandam security.  In the background is a piece we picked up last year.

@marshhawk Annie, I can give a personal testimonial for immunotherapy. In 2020 I was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelomia (usually caused by asbestos, probably in my case from talcum powder). I've been on immunotherapy (Opdivo) since November 2020, and still get infusions every three weeks. Things are very stable, and my oncologist is happy continuing the treatment. I hope Chuck will have a good result from his treatments!

Thank you Rich, Vanessa, Debbie/Tina, Ann, and Dixie.  Well, the Pilgrims embarked so many years ago on a voyage that would not be nearly as pleasant as on a BHB.  I'll pass on the avacado and while watermelon is tasty I haven't had it in years.  Dangerfield had quite a taste for the ironic.  Mutt's day will be wildly celebrated here.  I've been to Recife just once, back in 2015, on MS Maasdam.  The hamburger sounds nice, I'll bet there are great ones at Dive-In.  My alternative is Summer Fruit Salad with Sambuca, Chicken and Corn Soup, and Turkey Roast with Giblet Gravy and Cranberry as served on MS Prinsendam July 31, 2011.

It looks like a nice day in Maryland but I was just thinking that if I hadn't had my medical setbacks back in January I would now be on the way to Ketchikan on MS Nieuw Amsterdam.

We'll do it for you, Roy, starting next Sunday! All the best until you can get your next one! Did you read Crystal is going to be building four new ships?

There is a comic strip called Mutts from which I've occasionally posted strips. I don't think it is right for avocado and watermelon to share a day.

Speaking of watermelon, a friend of mine is participating in RAGBRAI, the [Des Moines] Register Annual Grand [bicycle] Ride Across Iowa. He seems to post mostly about food, almost to the point that I wonder whether they have food in Illinois, where he lives, and the other day he was rhapsodizing about watermelon.

I think that the key to a juicy hamburger is not to compress the meat. It is very hard for cooks not to, though. I might like the drink but will probably never know.

Another Rioja! Instead I might consider Dr. Frank's Saperavi 2020: "Vibrant violet in color with bright, brambly berry scents and a dusting of dried herbs. Supple and serious, the spicy fruitiness is rounded by layered complexity of earth and oak, but fresh and juicy simultaneously. An ancient grape variety native to Georgia that was first brought to the Finger Lakes by our founder in the early 1960s."

I haven't been to Recife, but I'll mention that the first Jews to settle in what is now the United States came from there, leaving when control of the area passed from the Netherlands to Portugal. Others went to Curacao and Suriname. This was in 1654, when New York was still New Amsterdam, a Dutch colony.

I'm going to Cooperstown at the end of the week for the Glimmerglass [opera] Festival and just checked the weather forecast. Usually it is hot, although slightly cooler than here, and the opera house has no air conditioning (or heat). Just once in my experience has it been unpleasantly cold, but that may be the case again this time. I'll need to take both a rain jacket and a cotton sweater, I think.

I've also been checking on restaurants. In Cooperstown, they have almost a split personality, because the Baseball Hall of Fame attracts even more visitors than does Glimmerglass. Apparently someone has just opened a Himalayan restaurant; the owner is Nepalese but most of the menu seems to be Indian.

I haven't been to Plymouth, England, but I have been to Plymouth, Massachusetts. In fact I lived in Plymouth County for a while, albeit the inland part.

We are enjoying our last day onboard Oceania Regatta In beautiful Victoria, Canada. 🇨🇦 Plenty of sunshine for a long walk into town and back onboard for a ‘back of the boat’ lunch. I added a scoop of avocado with the mahi mahi and even looked at the watermelon slices but confess, the vanilla malt at Waves was the dessert choice. 🥛

Filling out my passport application this afternoon and once off the ship, we will look for expedited passport service in Seattle. Hopeful that passport return time is less than 12 weeks. 🤞

Will you be Northbound on Noordam or Southbound on Nieuw Amsterdam.  I have seen the info on the new Crystal ships but doubt I'll be cruising when the first one debuts.  I do have something crazy going on now.  I'm booked on Queen Mary 2 New York-Halifax-New York September 29 to August 13.  We are in Quebec September 5 to 7.  I recently discovered Crystal Serenity is in Quebec September 4-6 and headed for New York October 13.  While I am fully paid in Cunard Princess Grill (well sort of, "paid" is with credits from the cancelled 2020 World cruise).    I get nothing back from only doing the first 7 days but this may be my only chance t sail Crystal again and they've given me a price I can live with.  There's a hitch right now because Cunard is resisting letting me leave at the midpoint but I think my TA is finally close to getting that resolved.

Bon Voyage to you and Maria.

One other note.  After a very long treatment process, @Scrapnana finally has finished her chemo and posted today.

Have a good evening.

We are still waiting for parts!?!  I am sorry I have not been able to post.  We had a lot of errands to run today and I spent a lot of time on the phone with the AC people.  They promise tomorrow morning,.  We will see.  I have been speaking with the supervisor who agrees that this is not acceptable.  However, acceptable or not, we still have no AC.

I am too tired to read the posts and to post more.

I will try to post in the morning and update everything..

While I was feeling all happy about going to my CA campaign, I got kidnapped by my current TX boss for 16 hours a week, all those managers wheeling and dealing and treating us like pawns on a chess board.  Why is he holding me back?  Because he says I am one of his better sales people, umm why do you think I wanted to go to another job for a couple of months where I sold well, and got paid more?  And now my hours are limited there.  So now my hours are going from 20 to 32 a week, along with all the doctors appointments, and therapy sessions, and Chuck is scheduling another eye surgery after he has settled to whatever treatment he decides on.  There is not one week in August which we have nothing to do but work.
The calendar is full.

I need a vacation.  I called Penny and she is letting us go over and use her pool on Sunday.  Luckily they installed stairs, there is no way my back would let me climb a ladder right now.  I'd just have to stay in the pool until i wrinkled to death, or wait for ice to  build up to climb out on.

@luvteaching Karen, being strong doesn’t mean that you can’t have feelings and tears. They are important parts of us too. Happy Birthday to your DS! 🥳
