The Fleet Report and Daily for Tuesday September 19th, 2023

Ahoy Dailyites.  It looks like it will be a nice day in central Texas with just a few scattered clouds.  It is 73F and feels like 73F with 81% humidity and a dew point of 67F.  There is an 8mph wind, so it should be pleasant for my walk a little later.  The predicted high will be 93F.  I'm not sure what is on the agenda today.  I do need to get either grass seeds or sod on the bare strip of yard where the crabgrass was, but after two days of yard work I need to take a break today.  I have the grass seed, but no sod, and I also could use a little top soil to even the ground.

I'm not much for talking like a pirate and do not like butterscotch pudding.  Dancing is nice, but that will have to wait for a while.

The Robert Frost quote is true.

We'll pass on the meal and the drink.  I think with Shiraz as the main grape, I would like to try the wine before I bought a bottle.

We have never docked in Kahului, but have driven through the town at few times when we rented cars.  I looked yesterday for pictures, but couldn't find any.  I thought I'd taken some, but I guess not.

Good for New Zealand for giving women the vote in 1893.

@kazu  Jacqui, it sounds like you are making progress on the yard cleanup.  Just do what you can and what really needs to be done.  The rest can wait until after your cruise.

@StLouisCruisers  Sandi, I hope you have a smooth and safe flight.  I hope Ren feels better soon.

Good Tuesday Morning Dailyites!  It is 57 degrees and I am loving it, so nice to sleep with the windows open and fresh air. The insurance people called me yesterday and said someone would call to schedule an appointment to come out, and then off we went to the PT and then the eye doctor. No one called.

PT was short, as my torturer had to work with someone else, who was in worse shape than me.  Doesnt mean Im not in pain today.  Just felt kind of slighted as she cut me by 15 minutes.  And then told me I would not see her again until October 9th.  I will see Ashley, and Im ok with that.

DH told the doc, all 3 docs, that came in to check on his eyes, that they were still very painful, dry, and blurry.  The surgeon and main doc told him, well of course he is, he had a lot done, and she told him that it would take up to 4 months to really recover.  They recommended using an eye gel at night, and using drops 4 times a day.  And she wanted him to come back mid October.  We explained that we wont be there on that day, and she got very upset, as she is moving to Utah, and then got us squeezed in for an early appointment on the 9th.  What is it about the 9th?, now I have to change my PT appointment.  And when I say squeeze us in, we have to be there at 8 am.  I see a donut in my future.

Today is my eye appointment.  And then work, and then symphony.

My last call of the day was to a woman who wanted a call back, so I worked more hours than I wanted, and in the middle of the sale her husband asked her to verify who I was and if I really worked for that business, I explained who I worked for, how long I had worked there, what the company does, and she said she would call and check before she made the purchase, and she is my last call back for the day. If she answers great, and if not, then well, I wasted two hours of my life. Not, I got paid....

@grapau27I want to talk to you about that sandwich.  It looks like a defeathered bird on a bun. The beak is on the left side of the sandwich. It was not food porn.  Please explain bacon in England.
Thank you.

I took modern dance, and I still dance like no one is watching, but feel side effects later.  I love butterscotch pudding, and to talk like a pirate

Since it is possible to go to Kahului from Lahaina, especially if you rent a car, I decided to post the links to the times Lahaina was the port of the day.  If anyone has pictures from Kahului with Lahaina as the port, they should be able to find them on the links.

This is what I posted on May 4, 2022, of the areas that are also accessible from Kahului.

I looked through my pictures from Maui and found some of our drive around the northern tip of the island, the Iao Valley and Hana.

Here are a few pictures of the northern coast and valleys.  It is a very pretty area of Maui, but the road is narrow and winding.  There are small communities and settlements along the road.

Hana is a long, winding drive from Lahaina, but the scenery is beautiful.  We saw this bus parked in Hana.  Hana would be more accessible from Kahului.

We visited the Iao Valley in 2000 on P&O Oriana.  At that time you could drive a long way into the valley.  This is Iao Needle which rises 1200 feet above sea level.

P2020168.thumb.JPG.02c50e373855c20a6f72bfb918380a36.JPG

To protect the Iao Valley environment, it is now a state monument.  You can only drive a short way into the valley to the visitor area with many walkways and trails.   These are from our 2013 Zaandam cruise.

Good morning everyone,

We like to say that time exists so everything doesn’t happen at once. Time fails at its job quite often as @marshhawk and I’m sure many others know. I made a vision appointment several months ago for a completely open day on a completely open week.  Now, I have to be at the eye doctor at 9:50, then home by 11:00 to help DH with a video visit with the cardiologist, then an in-office pacemaker check at 1:30. This is way too many things at once for a retired person who, like @kazu, is ill-prepared for her rapidly approaching and much-anticipated cruise!

@rafinmd I join the chorus here in hoping that you DO go on your cruise. Park your responsibilities at your cabin door and let the motion of the ocean help you heal.

@smitty34877 my deepest sympathies on the loss of Lou. I am sending you thoughts of comfort and strength. To quote Wolf Blitzer “may his memory be a blessing”.

Off to the shower to conquer my busy day!

Ahoy mateys, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  I haven't had butterscotch pudding in years; maybe it's time to get some and enjoy it again.  Dance day - it might be a slow dance day for us since DH is still recuperating.

@mamaofami wishing you and Sam a Happy Anniversary as you look back on the day you were wed.

@kazuI'm sure Ivan's been a big help to you while cleaning up the yard.  LOL  I can't imagine you heading off to a cruise without being prepared, you're pulling our legs.

Yesterday the smoke filtered into the city around lunch time and totally covered us for the rest of the day.  It didn't seem too bad until around 7PM when we had to close the windows, as it smelled like the next door neighbours were having a bonfire in their yard.  They weren't.  When I went out to get the newspaper this morning you can still smell smoke, but not nearly as bad as last night.  We're sitting at 8C (46F) with a predicted high of 19 (66F) and clouds for most of the day.  Provided we don't have showers, it'll give me a chance to scoop up the leaves all over the back lawn again.  But first, I've got to get my nails done - one of my gels came off a week ago and I've been babying it ever since until the others needed filling as well.

I know I'd like the drink of the day as a dessert on a BHB, would definitely like to try the wine, and think today's menu suggestion sounds great.  I've got a small beef roast that will go into the slow cooker along with root vegetables to make an easy dinner that we can enjoy on the deck tonight.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who is in need, cheers to all with celebrations.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

We have another nice day in store here in mid-Michigan.  I'm going to go to the gym and following that, the fish market, the coffee shop, and exchange my gas canister for the grill.  I found a lamp that I want for the outside post.  Now we just have to figure out how to get the old one off.  The new one will have a photo eye on it so I won't have to remember to turn lights on and off outside.

@StLouisCruisers Wishing you safe travels today, Sandi. I hope Ren is all better quickly.  I am glad that @aliaschief Bruce made it home safely yesterday. It looks like @Heartgrove is really enjoying his cruise.

The lemongrass chicken sounds good to me.  If I can find lemongrass anywhere in town I just may try it.  Here's the first recipe:  https://www.aheadofthyme.com/pan-fried-lemongrass-chicken/

lemongrasschicken1.jpg.15d6bcec7b9293730c56ae7e9c53baa8.jpg

That recipe is nice as it doesn't require any difficult to find ingredients outside of the lemongrass.  The cilantro is just for garnish, so it can be left out by those who don't like it.

This next recipe calls for fish sauce and it comes with a dipping sauce as well.  There are directions for air frying it.  https://christieathome.com/blog/vietnamese-lemongrass-chicken/

lemongrasschicken2.thumb.jpg.29d927098dbb0715b21d14e02d54228e.jpg

This one is a bit more complex, but most likely worth the effort.  It looks fabulous!  https://carlsbadcravings.com/lemongrass-chicken/

OK. Good morning Daily-ites!

Thanks to Rich, Vanessa, Debbie, Ann, Dixie, Sandi, and Lenda for your wonderful contributions.

Happy Anniversary @mamaofami and DH.

@smitty34877 I'm thinking of you and your family.

Prayers for all on our cares list.

My DIL went to a Pearl Jam concert in Austin last night, and today both son and DIL will say goodbye to us and head downtown Austin for another Pearl Jam concert and start for home afterward.

We had game night with our group. @dfish Debbie we played Farkle and had 2 tables of 4. Our friend beat all of us twice. His trophy picture is on my phone and I'll add it in a minute.

Sandi have a safe trip, hoping Ren feels better.

Roy, thinking of you, hoping you are feeling stronger and decide to take the cruises you so deserve.

Our Farkle winners trophy

After the "kids" leave today I'll be breaking down their room and washing sheets and towels and preparing for our friends coming down from Louisiana on Thursday.

We have a terrible outbreak of black crickets and they are driving us all crazy. Our neighbor had over 40 in their garage overnight. If you don't dispose of them quickly they stink when they die.

Hoping y'all have a beautiful Tuesday. Blessings to you. Know you are loved!

I wish it could wait Lenda.  The dahlias don’t survive a frost and there is bound to be one before I get back.  Besides when I get home it could be c-c-c-cold.  I HATE working in the cold 🥶

Nope, I’m not.  The only thing done are the M & G invites, name tags & sail away signs.  Still some roll call stuff to do.  I keep telling myself I have 2 weeks left to go.

Good morning. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

Talking like a pirate and dancing are fun. I'm not fond of butterscotch pudding. True quote. The meal sounds good. Maybe on the drink and yes to the wine. I've been to Maui, but not Kahului, I don't think. A good day in history.

I want to apologize for an error in the Care List. There is a typo, and the date of the passing of Terry's DH Lou should say 9/18. It was too late to correct it when I noticed the error, but it will be fixed in tomorrow's Care List.

It's quite chilly here, starting at 52 this AM, now 63 and up to 71 later. I have PT soon, but should try to mow the lawn when I get back.

@smitty34877 Thinking of you and your family at this time, and praying for eventual peace for you all.

@mamaofami A bittersweet Happy Anniversary. I hope Sam is stable.

@kazu I'm sure you'll get done what needs to be done before you leave; deep breath!

@Heartgrove Thanks for sharing your photos. Rest up today.

@StLouisCruisers Safe travels. I hope Ren is feeling better.

@marshhawk That stinks about your PT being cut short. I have very dry eyes, and in addition to using Restasis, I put an eye gel in at night (helps a lot). I think I sometimes sleep with my eyes not completely closed, which adds to dryness.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Nice Hawaii photos.

@Seasick Sailor I'm glad your sister is ok, looking at that damage to her car. Ugh on the black crickets. Thankfully our invasion of the spotted lantern flies is going away. It's egg laying time for them, and I just hope they're not worse next year.

Prayers for the Care List and a Toast to those Celebrating.

Annie, I'm sorry your DH's recovery from eye surgery will take so long.  It's bad when therapists cut someone's time to help another.  It sounds like they over scheduled with patients.  Hope the woman answers and completes the sale.

Gerry

Gerry, I'm sorry you are still bothered by smoke.

Joy, we've been dealing with the black crickets for a couple of months, but we are now seeing fewer crickets in the house.  I still saw some in the yard the last couple of days.  Maybe with our highs dropping, they are moving south.  😉

I wish it could wait Lenda.  The dahlias don’t survive a frost and there is bound to be one before I get back.  Besides when I get home it could be c-c-c-cold.  I HATE working in the cold 🥶

Jacqui, I know things in the yard have to be done before there is frost.  I was thinking more about inside the house.

This one is a bit more complex, but most likely worth the effort.  It looks fabulous!  https://carlsbadcravings.com/lemongrass-chicken/

Wishing you all a wonderful day!

I have lemon grass in my yard.  Help yourself!

Good morning! I slept for 12 hours. A wonderful nap! The rest of the day will be unpacking, sorting through mail, pharmacy run and anything else that catches my eye.

@mamaofami Happy Anniversary. Do hope your Sam is doing better.

@StLouisCruisersSafe travels. I missed it. Where are you going?

Our trip home was on time and as much as we enjoyed our latest adventure it’s always good to be home. Neighbor who picked us up at airport reports no new bear activity in neighborhood.
OK. Small tasks are calling. Thanks Rich and to all who make the Daily a daily must read. Bruce
