Dawn ran aground while leaving Bermuda?

My friend is on the Breakaway now. She emailed earlier to tell me they arrived in Bermuda late and that she's having a blast. She started her email with "IT WASN'T MY SHIP" which I knew once I did the research.

I don't understand the long line to get back on the Breakaway mid-day? When we were in Bermuda we were gone for hours at a time and grabbed a bite to eat somewhere NOT on the ship. I'll have to ask my friend if she was one of those that tendered in and then joined the masses to get back on the ship.

Glad it turned out well for all who were impacted.

re the long line to get back on the ship; I was wondering that too, but it could have to do with webcam and ship time being different, don't know, but it seems some people did get off Breakaway earlier by tender into port, and maybe by the time Breakaway docked, they were tired and hungry and just wanted back on ship to eat or rest. Just guessing here. If I had been on board Breakaway, I think I just might have stayed on board today at least till at dock, but that is just me, because I have been there before. I am glad that this incident was not a biggie, that the ship Dawn is not damaged, and especially that all on board were safe and now on the way home.

They would have stopped tendering for a while when Dawn left and they moved Breakaway to the dock. People just got backed up during that process.

That makes sense but still wondering why so many felt the need to return so early. When we were in Bermuda and returned late afternoon, the ship was half empty if not more.

I agree how weird it must have been to stand on that pier and see your ship dock in front of you.

I really hate the way the media spin incidents like this into some horrific nightmare. I was just watching ABC's World News Tonight, and the report was terribly slanted toward a doomsday scenario, going so far as to make it sound like everyone aboard was fearful of the journey home, a journey ABC even called a "voyage of uncertainty." No mention of the fact that the ship was carefully inspected today or anything like that.

This doesn't surprise me, since it's become the media's m.o., but it's nonetheless disappointing.

Actually, dropping anchor for the Concordia was the about the ONLY thing they did right. It slowed the ship and swung it closer to shore to stop. Left it in shallower water and closer to shore for many who jumped into the water.

If they had not dropped the anchor it would have drifted further out from shore and sunk faster.

Hopefully all cruise lines and their entire officer lineup had mandatory learnings delivered about the many errors and bad decisions made on that ship.

But as said earlier, dropping anchor in a narrow busy channel is bad for the port... closes it down and damages coral more. They are more likely to have continuous efforts to free the ship.

Um, the anchor on the Concordia was dropped incorrectly. Captifellintothelifeboat let out way too much chain. IF it was dropped correctly the ship would not have listed as much. He should have dropped 90 meters, instead 120 was dropped ( roughly on both ). The anchors never caught.

Since Disney is the parent company of ABC you have to wonder if they would have put the same doomsday scenario if it was a Disney ship that ran aground ?

That really sucks. :( I went and looked Bermuda trips up and found an April, some May and October on a few Carnival ships. I have no desire to go to Bermuda when the weather is not "hot" (or hotter than Spring or Fall). Darnit. Why don't they have other ships going during the summer????

MSC has one sailing out of Florida every April. We were there April 14-16 and it was lovely. It was warm enough for the beach and swimming.

As for why so many may have been lined up to get back on the ship - they may have had sticker shock when they saw what it cost to eat ashore. We ate over in St. George and a sandwich was $16.00.

The ones I found are 2016. What ship from Canaveral and when?

I'm looking at 2016 as well.

Sunshine from NY Oct

Sunshine Norfolk Oct

Pride Baltimore April & Oct

Ecstasy Charleston May

Sunshine PC Oct

Victory PC May

Splendor Norfolk Oct

ALL dates I would probably not even consider. Again, why no summer trips? Grrr :o

There's a very simple reason for Carnival not having any summer trips...they can't getting docking rights. NCL has a long term contract with Bermuda to have two ships docking in Bermuda for the summer season and RCCL has a contract for docking rights for RCI and Celebrity ships. Any other cruise lines needing to dock at the Dockyard are relegated to off season or the odd day here and there slots.

By the way, we really like October weather in Bermuda and are going again this October.

Other lines with smaller ships, notably HAL's Veendam, dock right on Front Street in Hamilton. That is super convenient, as you are right there in the heart of things with no need to take ferry or bus. After "a night on the town", you just walk across the street to your 'home'....

In addition, some occasional ships calling are scheduled to anchor at the Great Sound, and tender their passenger's in and out, such as the Crystal Serenity.

And finally, even smaller ships can dock in St. George's.

Here's a link of this years scheduled Bermuda calls...http://www.marineandports.bm/Documents/Shipping_schedules/2015_Cruise_Ship_Schedule.pdf

I bet their legal dept ok'd the term "voyage of uncertainty"

My thinking is that any voyage....train ride....plane ride....car ride.....could be thought of as "uncertain"

Heck crossing the street falls into that category

I stopped watching the news about 4 years ago because of their yellow journalism and the spin doctoring games they play

I was in Bermuda last week on the breakaway and a cab driver told us that Bermuda would prefer the smaller ships b/c they can dock in Hamilton and St George. the Veendam was docked there in Hamilton . they do a 4 day stay in Bermuda. He said it would help the country our tremendously. Bermuda is apparently looking at dredging those 2 harbors to make it accessible to larger ships. but many do not want it done for the impact on the environment . particularly the reefs.

Dawn made it back to Boston .:D

The tug escorting her in is not normal .

It was nice to see her make the end of the news cycle on WCVB. They aired it just before going to network news at 6:55AM. The helicopter snapped pictures of her entering the harbor. :D

Maybe after everything on the news the tug was a precautionary measure. Don't need her going into Logan airport blocking the runway!

So glad the Dawn is back and the Boston news stations can finally give it a rest (but not before they try to nab a few passengers disembarking and get their remarks)....the local media sure blew this out of proportion...
