Gallivanting Souls Posted September 16, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 16, 2016 (edited) Do you pack different according to what cruise line you are sailing. Example: Princess still has formal nights. Carnival has Elegant nights? So far on Princess, we have brought our formal wear. We do checked bags. I am wondering if we might be able to do carry on only on Carnival? We have two upcoming Carnival Cruises (both Caribbean). We will take some formal attire on the first and after that play it by ear. I would like to hear what are your thoughts on the matter! Edited September 16, 2016 by familyoutdoors
pris993 Posted September 16, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 16, 2016 No. We bring formal, informal and casual to all cruises... we have cruised Princess, Cunard, Celebrity, Holland America and NCL... pack the same for all.
Twickenham Posted September 16, 2016 #3 Share Posted September 16, 2016 I put yes, simply because of our QM2 crossing for which I did pack more formal wear than usual (although I always pack something for formal night). And I will of course adjust my packing depending on destination. Not a completely different wardrobe, but variations on a theme.:)
Rare Scrapnana Posted September 16, 2016 #4 Share Posted September 16, 2016 I dress for dinner each evening but I take more formal choices when on Cunard.
Rare LHT28 Posted September 16, 2016 #5 Share Posted September 16, 2016 we do not cruise on ships with formal nights but we do dress nicely for dinner
SadieN Posted September 16, 2016 #6 Share Posted September 16, 2016 (edited) We sail almost exclusively out of SoCal. On Carnival we wear black bottoms and a pretty top. Wear the same on Princess. On Carnival DH wears a Hawaiian type shirt and Khakis every night. His one Princess cruise he did the same, but it was a three day out of LA. A very relaxed cruise. Krazy Kruizers Posted September 16, 2016 #7 Share Posted September 16, 2016 I voted "yes". When we sailed on NCL it was very casual every night. Cunard -- very formal. HAL -- now has Gala nights and people dress however they want to -- getting similar to NCL. DH no longer takes his tuxedo but does take a suit and/or jacket. Princess -- it has been a while since we were on them.

Yes, we pack differently, the only time I take a dinner suit is in Cunard. But always take a dark suit.
luvs2beachit Posted September 16, 2016 #9 Share Posted September 16, 2016 Yes, depending on the line and also the itinerary. CCl and NCL ...........mostly casual. One or two nice tops and black pants. HAL, Cunard and Princess...........more dressy tops and a dressy outfit. European cruises......clothing more sedate and more formal. tip Posted September 16, 2016 #10 Share Posted September 16, 2016 No, we don't sail with Cunard. We are not into playing "dress up."
navybankerteacher Posted September 16, 2016 #11 Share Posted September 16, 2016 Of course: Cunard - dinner jacket HAL, Celebrity, Princess - suit Carnival - blazer NCL - any sort of partial body covering
Rare sparks1093 Posted September 16, 2016 #12 Share Posted September 16, 2016 (edited) I voted yes although so far we have pretty much packed the same things because there is little difference between the dress codes for the lines we've been on, but if we sail a more upscale line I would at least consider packing the tux. Any sort of partial body covering, love it! Edited September 16, 2016 by sparks1093
Aquahound Posted September 16, 2016 #13 Share Posted September 16, 2016 NCL - any sort of partial body covering Yep. Nailed it! :D
OCruisers Posted September 16, 2016 #14 Share Posted September 16, 2016 While the mass market cruise lines (except for Cunard) are much less dressy than they once were, some are still a bit dressier than others. DH no longer takes his tuxedo but does take a navy sports coat.
NLH Arizona Posted September 16, 2016 #15 Share Posted September 16, 2016 Yes, I pack differently depending on which of the three lines I cruise on. NCL - I pack really casual. Celebrity - I pack a little dressier Crystal - I bring out the finery.
Bizmark'sMom Posted September 16, 2016 #16 Share Posted September 16, 2016 I pack based first on itinerary, then I think about the line. High Arctic on Lindblad -- no dressy clothes at all. Luggage space is all about waterproof boots, warm layers, hiking clothes, binoculars, camera gear. British Isles on Celebrity -- nicer clothing in general. (J Jill and Eileen Fisher) I'll bring one basic dress and some nice shoes and jewelry or scarves to change the look. Flogging Molly booze cruise on NCL -- I make sure to have some sort of clothing on. I never participate in formal nights. I don't enjoy getting glitzed up in real life, and I avoid it while on vacation.
iancal Posted September 16, 2016 #17 Share Posted September 16, 2016 No. We only travel with the same carry on. Often we book last minute while on a land trip. The only items that may change would be seasonal clothing. We don't cruise on Cunard. We only pack casual clothes.
preschool teacher Posted September 16, 2016 #18 Share Posted September 16, 2016 No....just nice clothes and casual..we sail the Caribbean .....we used to dress really formal but not anymore....happy travels
SPacificbound Posted September 17, 2016 #19 Share Posted September 17, 2016 The land portion of our trips always make more differance in what we pack than the cruise part. The next trip coming up we will take water proof hiking boots for the land portion. Clothing will remain the same. The cruise portion is an East bound TA, followed about 3 1/2 weeks later by a Westbound TA. :)
iancal Posted September 17, 2016 #20 Share Posted September 17, 2016 We do the same. We plan and pack for the land portion. It is always longer. The cruise gets what is in our bag. More often than not we have land travel ion both sides of the cruise.
Rare Hlitner Posted September 17, 2016 #21 Share Posted September 17, 2016 Agree with another post...about packing differently for Cunard...especially when it involves crossings on the Queen Mary 2. That particular line is very formal and they do enforce the evening dress code in both the MDR and Ballroom. On a typical 6 night crossing you will have 3 Formal Nights (and they do mean Black Tie or a dark suit) and 2 other semi-formal nights (men must wear a jacket and tie). shipgeeks Posted September 17, 2016 #22 Share Posted September 17, 2016 The reason we voted "no" is that we will only sail on ships on which dressing up is the norm. So pretty much the same on all of ours.
Velvetwater Posted September 17, 2016 #23 Share Posted September 17, 2016 Nope and we have sailed Royal, Carnival and X. My formal gowns were crease resistant sailing on X and Royal due to no Ironing facilities but on Carnival I just bought normal one.
slidergirl Posted September 17, 2016 #24 Share Posted September 17, 2016 I said no. I will pack according to where I am going. A Med cruise will be packed for differently than a Caribbean cruise or a Pacific Coastal cruise. I choose to not cruise on lines where formal wear is required as I have no desire to pack a gown and I can get where I want to cruise on many lines that do not suggest anything over Country Club Casual (which is what most wear on non-required-formal nights). If my LBD isn't sufficient, I don't want to be there... If what I pack is good enough to be accepted at a fine dining establishment in a major city, it should be good enough for a mediocre dinner in a faux-elegant MDR... jocap Posted September 19, 2016 #25 Share Posted September 19, 2016 Yes, because of formal nights on several UK managed lines. Also, on a cruise of more than 11 nights, it all depends on whether there's a launderette on board as to how many clothes we take.
