Allure - Our room was raided and tossed!

True but we have also been stopped getting back on the ship and been asked if we had food.  The comment was that they are only looking for booze and weapons and that is not the case.

Sorry, that is not my experience,  no dogs checking boarding passengers in Cozumel.

The only place we have seen sniffer dogs is Orlando International Airport.

We see them at Cozumel all the time, but only checking passengers getting off the ships and entering the port shopping area.

I've seen them outside the terminals in Pt Canaveral and Ft Lauderdale.  And entering Cozumel, but not leaving.

That is the only place I've seen dogs too, at cruise ports. See them all the time in airports and train stations such as Grand Central or Penn Station.

Question: why are thy checking passengers getting off the ship going into Cozumel? Are people smuggling drugs into Mexico?

Or are they afraid of people taking food from the Windjammer onshore? 😉😄

As has been posted, in Mexico they are looking for agricultural products that are not allowed.

Wrong.

We were on a cruise where it was obvious the young men in a cabin down the hall were "casual" pot smokers.

They ended up under cabin confinement with a security officer standing guard round the clock outside their door.

They were removed at the next port and turned over to authorities.

What a complete waste of taxpayers money.

Apparently we were not singled out as half the back to back cruisers were raided as well.

Wow this is really unfortunate that this happened to you.  It is possible that CBP got a tip about drugs related to B2B cruisers on board and not specifically you.

We have never been to Cozumel but have been to at least 10 Caribbean islands plus the Bahamas and never seen sniffer dogs.

Unusual the dogs are checking people getting off the ship rather than when passengers get back on the ship.

Many countries have agricultural sniffer dogs including the US. They are to protect against bringing in disease and pests that the local agricultural does not have resistance to. Mexico is super vigilant about it. Agriculture is vital to their economy. Many Caribbean islands don’t have much agriculture or are too poor to have the dogs. They just hope cruisers read their Cruise Compass and abide by the prohibitions on bringing ashore prohibited foods.

On February 3rd, 2109, while doing a back to back on Allure.  It was turn around day in Miami.  There was a knock on our stateroom door in the early morning. I was in the shower and my partner was not dressed. Whoever it was, was covering the peep hole so we couldn’t see. We opened the door and It was a customs search team. Nine officers dressed in black with bullet proof vests, a ship security guard and a dog. We were allowed to put on robes and we waited barefoot, under guard in the hallway (on display to the other passengers walking by) while 4 of the officers and the dog ripped our room apart. We each got called in a couple of times to answer questions because they said the dog got a hit in the room.  All I had was prescriptions so there was nothing of course.  I wondered if they say that to everyone to try to get them to crack.   Eventually they left leaving us a mess. All of our neighbours think we’re druglords!

At the back to backers meeting area we soon found out that half of them were raided as well.

After 28 cruises this was something new!  Our room attendant told us it happens just about every week.  Just so you know they showed us no paperwork what so ever.  We are from Canada so I do not know the legalities.  It just seemed wrong to me to be raided, accused of hiding something in the room and our dignity taking a hit without direct cause or any paperwork.  I will add that they were all respectful to us, even when they accused me of having "something" hidden in the room somewhere.

At least I have a great story to tell now! Although it was quite disturbing to us on the day it happened.

Cheers!

Wonder why you were targeted?  It would be interesting to learn if there had been some behavior you and/or your cabin mate did that triggered the search. Good news is they found nothing and moved on!

What is puzzling to me is the statement that a number of other B2B cabins/cruisers were similarly raided on your sailing. That to me would be good to understand, again wondering if that was a trigger to target you being B2B.

Hope your second leg of the cruise was fun and had no other similar events.

We've been wondering the same thing.  We'e never seen or heard of this kind of "raid", so it seems logical there would be some reason a cabin is selected.

I think it has been well established that the B2B passengers that had rooms searched on this particular sailing were victims of the unfortunate reputation of the charter that was the second leg.

Something like that would make me very nervous.  Not because I would ever have drugs in my cabin (or anywhere else), but because I would be concerned that the previous occupant left something behind.  I read on another thread where someone found pot in their cabin.

Since I have NEVER heard of this happening to anyone else, ever, and I have been on a $hitload of cruises, I can hardly believe your cabin steward, "This happens every week."

Or maybe it only happens on the Allure.  I haven't been on the Allure in a few years.

Been on 35+ cruises and never have seen this. I have never done a back to back, so maybe this is when it occurs and that is why it is news to me

I have seen it many times and I also have seen multiple people arrested or thrown off the ship. Bermuda is one of the toughest islands and they bring the dogs on every week. It is considered a cash cow for them because the fines are very high, anywhere from 1k-3k of 50-60 days in jail.

I've never seen pier runners, either, but we all know that occurs. Your cruise may be the first leg of someone else's B2B so you never know.

We've been to Cozumel at least 5 times and every single time they have dogs sniffing for agricultural products as you enter the port shopping area from the ship. Think same place you get your ID checked to go back to the ship. I've also seen multiple youtube videos showing the same.   There's also always trash cans full of fruit and other non-commercial wrapped food products right there.

What we haven't seen in 27 cruises is people arrested or cabins being searched or guarded.
