Rare Sea Dog Posted October 30, 2021 #35776 Share Posted October 30, 2021 (edited) WOW! What a day. I am still on cloud 9 from the celebration I had on my last day at work at KMBC-TV. Let me first preface by letting you know something about me. I am a Christmas freak. Christmas is my favorite holiday. I decorate the house to the max with 7 trees and even a animated light show in the yard with a 12 foot animated tree. Now on to my day. I was first greeted as I came downstairs to a display that my wife Linda set up. On my way to work It finally hit me this would be the last drive in to work. It was kind of sad in a way. Once I got into the building I was greeted by a bunch of signs. And then this. My coworkers had decorated the whole newsroom in Christmas decorations. Complete with custom ornaments of me and my career. I was greeted by morning co-anchor Cody in cruise attire along with executive producer Cara in my standard photog vest. I edit all the video that goes into our noon newscast. At the end of the noon show our anchor gave a special shoutout and tribute to me on my retirement. I cried. Anchor Rob and the noon crew. Morning crew with my closest friend Donna with co anchor Cody and Meteorologist Katie That afternoon was the station sendoff. Everyone wore Christmas sweaters or my signature look with a photog vest. Even editor Viola put on a fake mustache to look like me. General Manager Sarah and Chief Meteorologist Bryan with their Christmas sweaters. I gave a farewell speech and then I was presented with some amazing gifts. Including a incredible book with pictures of my career and well wishes. And a beautiful inscribed compass to take on my cruise. And the highlight. My edit suite which had my office for over 10 years after we moved into a brand new building now has a plaque. An extraordinary day filled with joy, tears and an outpouring of love. I am very fortunate to have worked with some very talented people who are very dedicated to making a difference in our community. Despite what people may say about "the media," we do excellent non biased journalism to help our community be better informed, educated and alerted to things happening at this moment. I addressed the staff with this theme. "We are a family. We are friends. If you love who you work with, you will love where you work." My day finished, I left the job that I have done for over 40 years. Linda and my son Jonathan and his girlfriend then had a wonderful dinner at one of KC's finest steakhouses and then hurried home so I could watch the latest episode of "Below Deck." Next week pack for our cruise and post my first ever semi live thread. Looking forward to taking all of you on my retirement cruise. Thread will drop on Tuesday. Cheers and thank you to all who have expressed your well wishes. Just like my "work family", I consider all of you my "cruise family." Living in northern NJ, not to far from NYC, he had numerous home improvement projects & repairs done quickly. Crews come in at 8:00 am sharp & work the entire day. A few years ago, he moved 4-5 hours north to the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY and projects that should only take a week to do turned into a month. When asking a contractor for their time frame & schedule, he'd get replies like "Well, the fishing going to be good tomorrow so I'll stop by for a few hours after 1:00 pm" or "Turkey hunting season starts Wednesday so maybe next week I can start" Being that he's a go-getter, Type-A personality, it took my BIL a while to adapt to the Finger Lakes version of Island Time. I'd tell him to be happy they were at least being honest to the timing and reasons. I found a difference just from Brooklyn to LI.In Brooklyn a job would start on a Monday supposedly at 9AM.They came at 10,broke for lunch at 12 came back 2:30,left 4:30.In LI they come at 8:30 ,start immediately ,take 20 minutes to eat lunch and work till at times way past 5:00. This has been with every home repair work we have had done.

In NY, many times, workers would not show up when scheduled and when I finally tracked them down I got the standard NY response "ayyy lady the truck broke down." I was often told their cell phones didn't work so they couldn't call. Repair jobs we had here in TX took longer but trucks didn't break down. Here in TX I am referred to as "ma'am", not "ayyy lady". In NY, I never once had a worker enter my house wearing shoe coverings. Here in TX shoe coverings seem to be standard procedure. I have received calls from workmen here who let me know they are on their way and will be 10 minutes late. Having said that, I will forever think of myself as a proud New Yorker.

RIP to the valiant crew of the lost swordboat Andrea Gail. A buoy off the coast of Nova Scotia reported a wave height of 100 feet - the highest ever recorded in that area. Thanks to all those in the Air National Guard and the highly trained pararescue jumpers for putting their lives in harm's way both then and probably hundreds of times since. I have a newfound respect for these rescue efforts after what the Norwegian CHC did for me and the other 400+ "Viking Sky Survivors" who were airlifted to safety. Thankfully, everyone survived that voyage. That whole thing was amazing to read about. It has to have been so frightening to think of hitting the rocks and the thought of being winched up into a helicopter makes my blood run cold. Obviously you were loved and will be missed! 🙂 When I turned in my retirement papers and when everyone found out that I decided to retire they all were excited about throwing my a great retirement party. I must say, one of the best ones I've ever attended. 😉 When I gave my retirement spiel I started out by saying, "judging from the turnout, I'm thinking most of you are here just to ensure I'm actually and finally leaving". 😀 5

Rare h20skibum Posted October 30, 2021 #35798 Share Posted October 30, 2021 Greg @Sea Dog, congratulations on such a wonderful sendoff. It is great to have coworkers who are like family. Take it from someone who has been retired for nearly five years now, the next chapter you are entering is amazing. I haven’t been on this thread much in the last week, and just happened on your post. Once again, congratulations, and I am looking forward to following your cruise.
Rare Ozark_Kid Posted October 30, 2021 #35799 Share Posted October 30, 2021 @Sea Dog Greg, looks like they did it up for you. They got some great pics. Thankful you made it. Monday will probably be a weird felling day. It took me a couple months for me to get over that Sunday evening, tomorrow’s work, fell. Looks like you were blessed with a great work family. Now the cruise!
