CMV do this Andrew. We did an overnight on Marco Polo is Avonmouth, Bristol and another on Magellan in Tilbury. Gave us a great opportunity to tour the ship, use the bars, enjoy a dinner and breakfast the next morning, see a show, experience an overnight in the cabins and get a feel for CMV as a brand. Can’t recall the cost, but it wasn’t a lot and we had a Superior Deluxe (or something like that) on Marco Polo and a Suite on Magellan. Many years ago we did the same with P&O - an overnight on Oriana in Southampton, so they have done it before. I think it could be a good way to reassure those who are nervous about going on a cruise ship.

A lot of speculation regarding a possible Arcadia sale floating around in some groups I’m in. Anybody heard anything about this?

I just can't see a scenario where Arcadia could go so soon after Oceana. On Facebook P&O seemed to say on a number of post comments that they had no plans to sell other ships in the fleet short term. 

 

I think P&O brand is safe from further fleet changes at least through this brochure season. If covid is still around come 21/22 season and there is not let up from pause of cruise operations, then at that time Aurora and Arcadia might have trouble.

 

In other Oceana news , I saw this Greek article pop up on Twitter. I can't quite make sense of it myself. It seems like the Greek buyer might opt to keep the ship in lay up for resale when market recovers. There is also mention of Seajets. Curiously no mention of Chinese interests. 

 

But then the article also talks about some kind of P&O partnership to manage the ship. Maybe this has some bearing on why the ship still has P&O branding, I'm not sure. Very confusing!

With the ferry company they do just an overnight . I have never tried it ,just aware that they do do it,

maybe I would hate it.

The problem with the overnight trips now is after everyone they would need to deep clean the ship,the price would be prohibitive just to run it

God knows, Lady W likes to get dressed up, but docked in Southampton,  with the rain lashing down, staying whatsoever distance apart, with masks on, for a MDR meal ! Count us out.

I think they could open the shops, in theory, but they'd then have to add VAT on which would make everything more than you could get it in the normal shops here. They have to wait until they're out at sea to be exempt from VAT. Thinking about it though, cruise ships don't pay excise duty on the alcoholic drinks they serve in bars, even when they're in port. This is obviously a huge money spinner for them as duty normally makes up a large amount of the price we pay, especially on spirits. But if a cruise wasn't going anywhere they'd need to pay duty on the booze so that would reduce their profit.

Not excise duty, its the Spanish equivalent of VAT that's added on when you're in Spanish waters.

I’m not aware of Arcadia going although she may be getting a longer lay-up. I’m thinking through til April with no world cruise. Possibly Aurora in the same position too.

 

there is a strong connection between the Chinese group who bought Oriana and Greece. I can’t remember the details of the top of my head. The article reads as if they intend to buy then lease out the ship. As for the rest of the article, presumably, they pay 10% deposit, ship is sailed to Greece, where final price is negotiated based upon condition of ship. Contract likely to have min and max prices. In today’s world, you can’t send a group of Greek inspectors to Southampton to look over the ship, but you can send the ship the other way!

I'd be nervous being in Tilbury after dark.Plenty of garlic and a crucifix is the way to go.

I remember those and actually tried to get on one a few times. Unfortunately, as a solo, there was either no availability or the price was prohibitive.

On a serious note.We priced up a  Black Sea cruise with CMV and they were expensive,considering their ships are all 2nd hand rust buckets.They were doing a bogof but the first person price was over 6 grand.

We did an overnight on Marco Polo in Tilbury a few years back.  It was in the run up to Christmas.  I think the cost was £95pp for an inside.  As it was Tilbury, maybe the outside cabins were cheaper! 😲
