Cheer Dad Posted August 13, 2023 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2023 Am on the Apex now and have tried the chocolate croissants from multiple venues. All chocolate croissants sampled seemed to be the same - not fresh but maybe from frozen. The plain croissants from Luminae seem to be baked fresh on board. The chocolate croissants seem to be baked elsewhere, have dark chocolate inserted after baking, frozen and packaged for delivery to ship. The sticks of chocolate can be removed entirely in one piece and don’t seem to have gone through the baking process. They all have dimpled impressions that would be removed in the baking process. What gives? Cheaper to make onshore in commercial bakery?
Rare foodsvcmgr Posted August 13, 2023 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2023 Typically premade of similar quality will cost more, the savings is in labor.
CHEZMARYLOU Posted August 13, 2023 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2023 Ask the staff in Luminae, they might have an answer.
Lastdance Posted August 13, 2023 #4 Share Posted August 13, 2023 I love the almond croissants right out of the oven😘

Rare Jim_Iain Posted August 13, 2023 #6 Share Posted August 13, 2023 My understanding is all croissants are baked fresh every day on the ships. I have noticed that since resumption of cruising they have downsized them to about 50% of the previous ones. The ones in Retreat / Luminae have remained the traditional size. helen haywood Posted August 13, 2023 #7 Share Posted August 13, 2023 Yes, and the “almond” croissants now just have a slivered almond on top to differentiate them. I searched in vain for more than a smear of almond paste inside. Oh well, I’m not going to starve!
sunpsyche Posted August 13, 2023 #8 Share Posted August 13, 2023 II haven’t noticed a difference in the chocolate croissants, but I’m a take one bite kind of gal.
deliver42 Posted August 14, 2023 #9 Share Posted August 14, 2023 I really don't care if they're fresh or frozen. All I care about is that they're good, which they are in my opinion.

We still eat the almond croissants but not as many as we use to.
39august Posted August 14, 2023 #11 Share Posted August 14, 2023 You had to bring up the pistachio rolls, didn't you! I will be having one in about 5 weeks. Would that I could only eat ONE..
CulverCityCruisers Posted August 14, 2023 #12 Share Posted August 14, 2023 On Summit they bake them fresh in the OceanView Cafe and they are smaller than before , but are stll fresh baked and wonderful, as are the almond (filled with Almond paste)
Rare Nemanoxer Posted August 14, 2023 #13 Share Posted August 14, 2023 I´d rather have them an inch smaller but delicate instead. Will find out on the 26th.

cruisegirlppp Posted August 14, 2023 #16 Share Posted August 14, 2023 My husband will be evaluating the chocolate croissants on our upcoming cruise while I will be making sure the almond croissants are edible... both of us will do quality control on the lemon tarts!

Rare horseymike Posted August 14, 2023 #18 Share Posted August 14, 2023 I think all the baked stuff used to be better, they still look good , but they taste like they have chinsed on the ingredients.
Rare Pennstatedj Posted August 14, 2023 #19 Share Posted August 14, 2023 During our recent July Equinox cruise I had a choc croissant every morning for breakfast. Most morning they were hot and really good. I ate about 8 am in MDH and they were great. When I ate at 830 on two occasions they were not hot and not as good. Either way they were the same size and really good.

Michael1965 Posted August 14, 2023 #22 Share Posted August 14, 2023 The best is the chocolate cake in the dining room -- they should offer that for breakfast.
zitsky Posted August 14, 2023 #23 Share Posted August 14, 2023 (edited) This is bugging me. This is a croissant. This is a pain au chocolat. Which one are we talking about, please? Does anyone have a picture of what I'll get from the Café al Bacio? Yes, it really is that important. 😁 Edited August 14, 2023 by zitsky

Joked about having the chocolate cake for my disembarkation breakfast in Luminae on the Equinox. To my amazement, it showed up with a side of bacon 💕 1
