I could not agree more. However, 75% of our cruises are 2 weeks or longer there is no way I can travel with one case plus carry-on.....I ned two cases plus carry on. My shoes alone fill my carry-on and then there is my tux, which I will never cruise without....etc....etc.

Charles

LOL - Well, like me, maybe we need to figure out a way to have clothes at the ready either at the port or on board waiting for us, so we can travel even lighter... :')

bon voyage

And back to let's Have Fun on this Ship....I'd really hate to see this Wondferful Thread turn into a Dress Code war. Maybe the mods can snip out the ones, including mine, that take the detour.

There is now a dress code thread for EDGE..,so far it has been quite civil... Anyone with an interest in the topic can head over there!

Keep this about the ship, I agree,

Yes, the Normandy on the Edge is supposed to be a direct take from the former restaurant on the Summit. And I’ve read in a few places that some of the fittings from the Summit will be installed on the Edge version.

Cheers!

I looked at some of the history of the M Class restaurants. For those unfamiliar, the ship's restaurants originally were:

The Millennium had Olympic, the Infinity had S.S. United States, the Summit had Normandie and the Constellation had Ocean Liners. They each had original paneling and artifacts from the transatlantic luxury liners after which they were named (Ocean Liner includes paneling from the Ile deFrance).

The Normandie restaurant décor on the Summit featured mahogany paneling, ocean liner memorabilia and paintings (The Normandie had art deco style and was decommissioned in 1946). Here is a picture from the Summit Normandie restaurant when opened:

The French Normandie Restaurant restaurant on the Edge is billed as a conceptual cousin to Murano.

The Edge press releases talk about getting some of the paneling from a home, not the Summit - not sure if it is both:

In its décor, Normandie will use actual wood paneling from the SS Normandy that Celebrity acquired by buying (and “flipping”) a house in which the paneling had been incorporated.

I can't wait to see the panels they were able to salvage (and if they also saved some of the panels and artifacts from the Summit).

While looking at this, I found this picture of the First Class Olympic dining room (from the Olympic):

Here's a picture of the Edge Normandie - it feels like they are trying to create an elegant old style look (though updated). It's nice, since this ship has a modern feel with things like the Magic Carpet and cutting technology, but will have some areas that have a feeling of old style and elegance.

For the past 3 quarters, the RCCL financial reports have listed Edge and Apex at 2900 berths, but E3 and 4 at 3,200 (they were listed at 2,900 before that).

Interesting. Looks like they might be adding an extra deck or two on 3 and 4. Maybe that’s why they are saving Beyond as a name for one of those, as they plan to make them bigger and better?

Llyod, I have a question. Apparently on the maiden voyages there may be a function on the heliopad. We had this discussion a few pages ago. It appeared there was not way to get to the bow from the outside. You posted some nice photos of what looked like a strictly crew path to the bow... 'heliopad' area. Do you think that is how passengers would get to that area... or is there another area that would be considered the heliopad? VT posted this info on another thread. Thanks... just nosy

Kearney: I have been on the helipad on Celebrity ships and there is usually a door at the end of a forward hallway that the staff have open for guests that have an invitation to the event. On the invitation they will tell you where to meet. They recommend sensible shoes and give you a hand up through the doorway.

On the Edge, the door could be on 7 - there is a circle around a possible doorway?

We were invited to the helipad on the Eqinox, we were escorted through an crew door from a passenger hallway and then onto the helipad.

There will not be much room on the helipad of Edge compared to other ships primarily because of the cool bow design that has less space forward. So if they have an event there, the number of people allowed maybe small. Then again they could do it in groups.

I agree, Tall. I am hoping the crane platform and walkway around the edge are temporary. This is what I posted on another thread:

With the shortened bow on the Edge, the space traditionally named the Heilpad is small, but could host some people for a special event. Here are a couple of screen shots. There is that walkway along the edges and a front crane platform that may be temporary - if they are, there will be a lot more space and if not temporary, that front platform is your spot for a "King of the World" camera op. :D

I hope that walkway and crane platform will be gone and then there will be a nice space for events (look at the size of the people at the rail in the second picture to get a sense of the size of the space).

I think the "crane" platform and the stairs leading to it are permanent. Also, looking at this photo, I doubt they would let anyone on the sides. Once you walk up to the top of those stairs there seems to be a gate on the side.

This was my point from an earlier post. There are too many obstructions to allow a landing helicopter. On S and M class ships some of the guardrails collapse to eliminate hazards. Removing all that hardware is a lot of work especially at sea.

As far as the smaller viewing area, I guess the area could be relegated to suite only guests, with no need to accommodate a large group of people.

Helicopters do not land on Celebrity M or S class ships. The flagpoles are lowered into hatches, copters hover, lines are lowered, crewmen drop to the helipad tgen connect stretchers and raise them to the awaiting rescue craft. The name helipad doesnt mean it’s a landing area, but a service area

I posted this on another thread:

I think the term helipad is a misnomer. I found this online regarding medical helicopters landing on a ship:

"I’m a UH-60 pilot and frequent cruisers. The Air Force and coast guard fly variants of the H-60. We typically weigh about 20,000 lbs with full fuel and equipment, I think USCG H-60s weigh more with the external fuel tanks. Anyway long story short the landing pad on the ship can’t support the weight of the helicopters, which is why we can’t land"

They usually hover and lower a basket/stretcher to rescue someone on a cruise ship, from my understanding.

They still call the area the helipad, but it is not expected to have space to land a helicopter.

As far as who is invited, they may do it more than once on a cruise so that more people can experience it. We have been invited when we have been in suites, so was pleasantly surprised to be invited when in AQ last time. Our first time cruiser travel buddies were also invited and we were surprised to see another couple we had befriended on our roll call, also in AQ, on their first ever cruise (we had invited them to dine in Blu with us one night so maybe we came as a package ;)).

With the smaller venue, even being in a suite won't guarantee being invited (we are in one of 146 Sky suites). I won't expect to be invited, but will be pleasantly surprised if we are. Maybe you could ask about it at Guest Relations - you never know...:D

EDIT: Westlake, looks like we were posting simultaneously :D

Here is a quick video of the history of the SS Normandie. Cause of fire has been disputed, may have been started by the Mafia to gain advantages during WW II including release of Lucky Luciano.

Thanks! This was very interesting! It was amazing to see the cars on the highway driving past the ship on its side in the harbor. She was a beautiful ship. I'm glad they had removed some of the beautiful interior features before the fire and will look forward to seeing them in the Normandie restaurant on the Edge!

You made me nostalgic and I truly miss these M-Class beautiful restaurants! They added a unique individualism to these ships and service was always exceptional.
