Good Morning All

At risk of being a complete bore,  here's another update. I promise this will be my last post on the matter of kids' insurance but you've all been so helpful with suggestions I thought this might be of interest: In an amazing upturn of events we got 2 comms this morning from insurers who had yesterday declined to give a quote due to her age etc. Long story and one and a half hours on the phone later we've got a price of £2.5k - £2k less than the fee paid yesterday! We've put me on as a named driver ( clean licence, been driving for 100 years), thank you Sarah, and lowered the car value to what today's cost would be, thank you Kalos. In fairness, the new insurer offered these as suggestions. We only had to pay £100 cancellation fee to yesterday's insurers and the guy said "I don't blame you. I'd do the same myself". I don't understand just how this could happen though. Could this be fluid pricing? Who know, who cares. She's fully comp with all the legal etc cover - and we're better off than we were last night!

Thank you all so much for your opinions, suggestions, for reading all my family stuff and for being great friends. Hope you all have a good day. Jane xx

Good news! One thing, isn’t there a cooling off period when you take out insurance? £100 cancellation fee seems steep and more than covers the 24 hr insurance period. I might be completely wrong though!

A few days ago I saw something 'unmentionable'   which I didn't post as I feared retribution and being outcast.

Then yesterday I saw something even more 'unmentionable' so I bought meself a tin 'at.  I'm not scared!!!😇🙃

I had an e mail from a Hotel nr Gatwick saying book now for Christmas Parties and Christmas Packages.

THEN today I received a notification from a big Indian Restaurant nearby asking for bookings for a George Michael Tribute on New Years Eve!!!!!!!

I'm off......

I've been thinking ahead to Christmas too, especially as we have lots of birthdays in that month and quite a few in the preceding month too!

She is, Jane. Very much so. Brought up to be so in her Home Ed group of about 25 - socialisation was high on the agenda, and they got involved in all sorts of external activities, such as drama, Scouts etc. She’s taken leading roles in local stage productions, and was really looking forward to school to make new friends. The only disappointment yesterday was not having found a new ‘best friend’ on day one!

Our grandson is only 7, and he decided he wanted to go to school too, like his sister. He started yesterday too for the first time.  He has a little cousin who has Down’s Syndrome and he adores her. It’s just not an issue, so when he met a little boy yesterday with quite severe autism and nobody to play with, he went straight up to him, announced his name, and said ‘Let’s play football’. The child’s one to one carer said it was the first time he’d ever gone off on his own with other children. That’s just awful.

Home Education gets a lot of stick, some of it justifiably when it’s not done properly. When it is done properly, though, and there are qualified teachers such as my daughter in this group, along with academics and other professionals, it’s absolutely first class. The teaching ratio of a private school, but none of the cost. What’s absolutely crazy, though, is that they have to pay their own examination entrance fees for GCSEs and A levels, and that can easily run into several hundred pounds or more.

There are some savings though - no expensive school uniforms, and holidays outside school holidays. That’s now changing!

What a lovely post Harry about your 7 yr old Grandson and what a kind young chap he sounds. I bet the carer could have wept watching the young boy go off with his new friend……

All the children in the Home Ed group are the same: it’s the way they’ve been educated to be - look after each other. Very easy in that sort of environment, but almost impossible in most schools. Having said that, though, our children were educated in our village primary school, and it was much the same there. They were village kids, the teachers were all local, and everyone knew each other. When our daughter talks about it to friends now they tell her it must have been some imaginary Enid Blyton world!

So pleased for you and the Granddaughter Jane.

After she's drove for a year get her to record her mileage.

Say she only drives 4k a year then insure for 5k  .

Since we retired our mileage dropped so we adjusted ours bring the price down further.

Happy motoring you two 🙂

Thanks so much Kalos - another helpful tip. Jane xx

What a lovely heart-warming post Harry. That poor little lad. Hopefully he now has a bestie in your kind little grandson. I didn’t know much about home schooling until I read this but I'm glad I do know. Exemplary. Thanks very much for sharing this. Jane xx

Thanks Ardennais but no. They told us yesterday there would be a £100 cancellation fee and at that time we didn't expect to cancel! Jane xx

I too thought there  is  a cooling off period with insurance....14 days?....the £100 cancellation charge should kick in after the cooling off period

Thought I’d share something my four year old grandson said today. He wanted me to carry him down my stairs - he’s quite heavy now - and he said ‘please, you’ll be my best girl’ 😂😂 How could I refuse?!

I told his Mum later, she said to him  ‘oh I thought I was your best girl’

£100 isn’t a small admin fee, unless it’s a percentage of the astronomically high premium!

I think I would be tempted to do a charge back via the card I had used to pay, even if that fails in the end at least it would have caused them some pain to sort it out.

P&O's IT is 5* compared to British Gas. 2 weeks ago they ' suggested ' my DD for electricity should go up by £40 pm. Today's email has reduced it by £33 pm. Perhaps when they recalculate my Gas, I can use their payment for our Caribbean cruise.😉

It looks like another dull day here.  I have to go round to my niece's house to take her daughter's birthday card and present before she goes to school.  Today she is 13 but she has been a teenager in her head since she turned 10 so we all know what to expect

Yesterday afternoon we had smart meters installed so our entertainment now is  watching the effect that different appliances have on our consumption 😂

Our neighbour made a point to tell DH that we had been conned even though it costs nothing to change.

With two teenage granddaughters I can tell your niece exactly what expect - or perhaps not! What a strange comment from your neighbour Josy. Have a lovely day. Jane xx

It could well happen.

Just had a £1,300+ refund from our duel energy provider for the last six months and our monthly payments have been slashed in half...

And all achieved without the assistance of a "Smart Meter" :classic_cool:

Give me a "Woo!"... give me a "Pee!" and make it a great big "Woopee!"

Really hope that lots of others are having the same experience.

We got £220 back from EDF last month after our six month review and they left the  £64 monthly payment alone. Ours will shoot up in August when our two year fix ends. We have been lucky as we have not felt the effects of the price rises, I have to say I was a bit shocked at the rise in the standing charge as they have more than doubled with all the suppliers. I always went for a deal with the lowest standing charge with a slightly higher cost per unit as that worked for us being away a lot.

Nice to have you back posting Vamps, haven’t seen you for a while (or I have just missed you when you have which is also perfectly possible).

Anyway, hope all is well with you and yours.

Is that a specific ship and is it for this year or next? I looked at the possibility of a September cruise and was shocked how expensive it was as opposed to similar for next year! (I thought it was because solo occupancy was already high).

Everything is going up, a mid week shop what would have cost us around £40 is more

like £60 + these days .

Even at the garage the air -line  that took.20p ,now only takes a £1 coin or a swipe of

your debit/credit card  😮  Now that's what I call  real inflation🙃

One strange thing that I’ve noticed from food shopping is that the price of big pot natural yoghurt has actually gone down, it is actually half the price of a pint of milk. At 2 supermarkets that we use where a pint of milk is 90p the equivalent size yogurt  own brand is 35 and 40p. When I saw the price online I thought that it was a mistake.

I’ve also noticed that price rises have slowed and that there are more ‘special’ offers around now on food stuffs. Hopefully the lower energy costs will feed through to producers and shop shelf prices. Gas price markets are around 70% less than a year ago and oil 20%.

Yep I keep reading on here how P&O's menu has been cut by 25% 🙃

Joking apart , fuel wholesale as you say is falling ,yet a few garages cannot resist putting

the price up on the forecourt pumps .

On our first cruise back after lockdowns we were told that by staff serving in the buffet rather than help yourself saved 30% food waste. I guess people like me are embarrassed to be served a lunch of chilli, curry, fried chicken, chow mien with sides of chip, pasta, potatoes and rice on the same plate😂
