What is the appeal of sea days?

I love sea days! Sometimes they feel a bit crowded, but once you find your spot, I love to just watch the ocean! Actually, I'm sitting here right now, reading Cruise Critic and watching a YouTube video of a balcony view....just the water going by. :-) I love it!

I have a greater appreciation for sea days now that I have a toddler. We don’t have time for reading, napping, or things like that between taking care of a toddler, work, a house, etc.. one of the number one things I’m looking forward to on the Vista this Sunday, is the IMAX theater.

Three things I like about sea days: 1) it offers variety (and a chance to rest up) from port days, 2) casino is open during day, 3) MDR brunch. On a seven day cruise, I'd be happiest with four port days, spaced with a sea day between each. I would never do a "cruise to nowhere" though, as the ports are one of the biggest draws to cruising for me.

I love a mix of sea days and port days. On the sea days I love having down time with the whole family together, which doesn't happen as much at home as I would like with work, school, and sports schedules. We sleep in (which never seems to happen at home), enjoy a leisurely Sea Day Brunch together, and then wander around the ship, sit by the pool, play a game together, and snack. Then we take a nap and do the whole thing all over again, until it is time for dinner, show, and bed. After a sea day I look forward to my port day, and nice versa,

Not fond of sea days. That's the reason we don't do TA cruises or Hawaii from US. That being said, we could have used an extra sea day on our Med cruise a couple years ago - long days in port.

I agree 100% on this one. 10 days 8 ports. It was a great experience but it was exhausting! I was longing for another sea day.

I'm not a huge fan of sea days but still like to have a couple. We schedule full day activities for every port day. Port days are our go go go days. Sea days are when we sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast and lunch. Sit by the pool and watch whatever entertainment there is. Read a book. There's usually some programming during the day whether it's a lecture on the history of the Caribbean, or an info session on behind the scenes of the boat, etc. so I will usually hit those as well. Yes, you can read a book and relax at home for free, but for a normal week at home you usually have a weekend to rest and relax. That's the sea day to us, the no stress, no schedule day to be 'on vacation'

I would book a cruise with all sea days if I could! Well, I kinda could by booking a Trans-Atlantic, but I can't afford the airfare for that!

I hang out on my balcony. I read because I'm always having to do something else at home when I'd rather read! I watch the sea go by, just because I can. I search the horizon for other ships.

I wander the ship. A lot. Just wander. No destination, don't need one. People watch. Every corridor is different, from the music to the people to the workers to the decor to the smells. I just wander.

On the Breeze or the Vista, take in a movie. I don't do that kind of thing at home.

Eat.

Wander.

People Watch.

Relax.

Read.

Drink.

Repeat.

I choose cruises by having more sea days, I even hope and wish we miss ports and at times we have very very happy!

The way "I see things:

If I want to be on land I take a land based vacation (we do go to our favorite island Aruba two weeks per year)

Taking a cruise you dock at the worst place in most islands

I hate vendors bothering me and I hate haggling (Aruba does not have any of this)

Being at port everything on the ship pretty much closes down

I can't stand going to the same old ports over and over, its not that they add on different ports

Spending a few hours in a port is ridiculous to me, waste of time

Sea days are relaxing, everything is open your able to do whatever you want and not do a thing if that is what you want

Casino is open during all day and night during sea days

Taking a cruise is all about being on the ship, being out on sea..away from land!!!:D

At first I was all about the ports too. But I have been to a lot of the Caribbean ports. I like Sea Days because I can sleep a little later, lay sun, go to an activity (drop in/out as I please), NAP (what is that) or just do whatever I want. I can have a frozen drink at 2 p.m if I feel like it. I don't relax at home. If I am at home I am going somewhere, doing laundry or something..

Now, I am not one of those people that wants all sea days or cruise to nowhere. I like the ports too. I like to see new places and do new things, which is what the ports are good for. But those also mean planning, and getting up earlier- usually. And spending money. And I can only handle so much of that on a trip. Truly for me a good mix is a 7 day cruise with 3 ports (not counting home port). That gives you 3 port days and 3 sea days (not counting embarkation day). Its a great mix. That is why I love cruising honestly. You get a mix between exploring and laid back. Just my opinion anyway.

You pretty much quoted my thoughts. lol We have our 3rd cruise booked so we haven't seen any port twice. I love seeing new places, but, port days are tiring. Our next cruise has 4 port days, we are used to 3. Luckily one is an evening stop so shouldn't be too bad. It is so relaxing to me to watch the ocean. I also like the casino, some of the activities/games, and people watching. We have cruised in groups so far so we will find a spot somewhere we can see the ocean and just sit, have a drink and catch up. Our families are scattered around 3 different states so we enjoy the time.

I could do all sea days. I just love being on the ship.

Last 8 day cruise I did, I never got off once in port as I'd seen them all before. Got on in NY and never set foot on land until we got back! It was great.

And yeah, the casino is open on sea days!:D:D:D

I could do that! An 8 day cruise to nowhere! (CTN!) We have done B2B's and it's very cool to be the only pax on the ship for a little while. Same with staying on when at port. I have even offered to help the stewards vacuum lol. :o;p

For me, because I work full time M-F, a sea day is like a Saturday without having to do laundry. I can sleep until I wake up, relax with a cup of coffee, go out to eat. I explore, shop, read, take in a movie. I love sea days!

I love sea days, the more the better. A Transatlantic is my favorite cruise. One TA I was at sea 8 days straight. Usually they are around 4-6 days in a row. I love the sea, makes me happy being on a ship just chilling by the ocean.

LOVE sea days! If I'm at home someone is always wanting me to cook something, heat something up, clean something, or take them somewhere. Sea days I can sleep in guilt-free, not have a schedule of things to get done, and be as lazy as I want without anyone bothering me.

Some day I will try a TA cruise.

Am I missing something? I don't particularly care for sea days. Everything feels crowded and the activities are repetitive. I also don't want to spend the day reading a book or playing cards because I can do those things at home for free. What do you do on sea days?

No, it is not just occurring to me. I have never liked them. I brought it up because of the recent itinerary changes and ports being replaced with sea days instead of different ports. I understand the reasoning behind it so no lecture needed. I am just wondering what other people do on sea days to make them enjoyable.

I feel the same. I never book a cruise with more than 3 sea days. That's about all I can take. Can only sit around for a bit. On our last cruise we tried to go to MDR for lunch one day to take up time, but the line was really long. If the weather isn't very good, maybe go to the gym and walk on the treadmill? Going to try that next sea day...

Sea day? A great day in an all-inclusive resort - starting with room service coffee and pastries on the balcony. Later, sea day brunch with an outstanding Bloody Mary, followed by late afternoon snack from the deli or pizza bar. Late dining, a show or more balcony time. During the day, we enjoy dominos, reading and visiting on the Serenity. The cruise is what you choose to make of it, so enjoy!!

I get up at 6am, go to the pool deck, and put towels and flip flops on 8 different lounge chairs. Then I go back to my cabin and sleep until noon. lol! Just kidding!

Everyone else pretty much covered it. I love NOT having to plan. I sleep until I feel like getting up. If I don't feel like leaving my cabin, I'll do room service for breakfast. Then, when I'm ready, I'll head up to the adult pool and catch some sun and a swim. I may eat in the dining room for lunch, or try something different. I may play in the casino for a while. It's all about what I want when I want it. Life doesn't get much better than that.
