brenderlou Posted August 29, 2020 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2020 How would anyone know (and be able to post here) when crew would be going back to ships? I know this would be a great sign that sailings would start but how would we know? Sent from my iPhone using Forums

That didn't pan out But the casino host I am friends with, told their neighbor, who is a godfather of my dentist’s daughter that an Oasis class captain we have a timeshare with said that we would be cruising September 1. I love those posts, always very reliable. 5

jalves Posted August 29, 2020 #10 Share Posted August 29, 2020 Perhaps those people who follow ship movements can discern when ships are going to some specific ports to take on crew?

Just the logistics of getting all the crew to the ships is going to be a major ordeal. The next few weeks will be telling.

Rocket3D Posted August 30, 2020 #17 Share Posted August 30, 2020 (edited) Agree that crew members rotate on schedules that may not be closely linked to passenger schedules. The casts for the shows train at FIU Biscayne Bay campus facility. It takes a month of training if I remember. The casts usually change over on the ship during the TAs. The casts overlap for 2 weeks on ship during the hand-off. Sure, those routines are all messed up. That is a lot of needed leadtime to prepare casts..... so it remains to be seen (bad pun) if Royal will have a normal shipboard show lineup....after restart. Hard to say by those port visits - 3 RCI ships resupply all the time in Southampton or other UK ports which is a good location to get crew on/off, but unless one is getting info directly from the ship, no one knows if the crew numbers are going up. The same thing is happening in Barbados with even more ships.

That is a lot of needed leadtime to prepare casts..... so it remains to be seen (bad pun) if Royal will have a normal shipboard show lineup....after restart. Crew rotations in normal operations are linked to cruise season, usually 2 ones, winter and summer in most ships. Some might have such an 8 per 8 or 9 per 9 months contract schedules, others are from summer to winter repositioning cruises by the norm. MSC which is the one I'm more in touch usually makes their rotation near the repositioning cruises. On the current situation, ships will only to have minimal crew supply to cope with regular ship maintenance, no more than that. If one reads the other thread on this subject, consensus is that come the day companies feel confident cruising can restart and in some 2 months we will have ships with full crews to operate, but that doesn't translate to all the workers coming. They will have reduced crews for the reduced capacity. Regarding shows, I believe they will be different to the usual. They will most likely to hire more "self-made" artists with their own, almost short and simple, shows than risk to have full casts for the usual ones. Cheaper and less risky at the number of involved people to go with... Have a nice day!...

Travel isn't as easy as it was and quarantining, etc. makes it better to keep them on the ship longer, esp as they're not really going anywhere. Not the intensity of a cruise with multiple port visits in a week.
