Bars opened in Florida yesterday 😉

Monday, Jim.  They announced yesterday that the bars will be allowed to open on Monday at 50%.

But yeah, of course the Cruise Line Execs are asking to restart - if they were to say anything else, they would be the "recently-retired" Exec.

You're missing ontheweb's point. Of course cruise lines want to resume sailing, the same way any business under restrictions due to Covid wants them lifted. What else do you expect them to say?

I don't know that them saying it changes anything or makes us closer to cruises resuming though.

You missed my point. My point is bars, restaurants, hotels, casinos, gyms, barbershops, pools, are open. And cruise lines should be able to be open at some level as well.

But the reliability of these tests is a problem. False positives (up to 5% of those tested) would leave 1 in 20 healthy would be cruisers standing at the dock. People won't want to take that chance. And false negatives (as high a 37%, but some are admittedly much better) could be even worse by allowing infected cruisers on the ship.

In the end, however they do it there are going to be some Covid infected cruisers on the ship at times. So the only path I can see forward is to wait for a vaccine that protects you from infection or at least makes the infection much less severe.

the false negatives will always be an issue which is why they have to do the social distancing and masks onboard. However, I was really impressed by how the y handle positives. If you test positive on the rapid test they then give you the PCR ‘gold standard’ test. You don’t get denied boarding unless you test positive on both. Getting two positives in a row across two types of tests will greatly reduce if not eliminate the false positives being denied boarding. Will certainly be much less than 5%

CDC was not part of the call, it was an effort to get local government involved in pressuring CDC, which likely won't work.  Comparing US cruises to European cruises is not valid, as the European model allows for the cruise line to reach agreement with ports to allow infected and quarantined passengers to be disembarked for treatment/quarantine ashore, while CDC does not want either treatment or quarantine to impact any local, state, or federal infrastructure.  And, even if CDC lifts the no sail order, they can make the same requirements that are in the no sail order to be the new requirements for ships requesting "pratique", or health clearance, before entering US ports, which would just do the same thing as the no sail order.

So, do you think the CDC will extend the no sail order until a vaccine is rolled out?

It comes down the cruisers agreeing to follow the protocols. I honestly don't know that Americans are capable.

A large number, though not quite a majority, have been conditioned to not follow rules. It goes way beyond "questioning authority".

I came across an interesting article yesterday (not cruise related, but food for thought): https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20200909/could-your-mask-be-a-kind-of-vaccine-against-covid-19?src=RSS_PUBLIC#1

Once the CDC gives the okay for cruises to start, I'm wondering if the home port cities will be ready to comply., especially if their cases of Covid-19 are still high.

This will also be another issue.

Don't expect Los Angeles County (San Pedro and Long Beach) to open up soon. Just sayin.

Right? I can already see it.

Passengers arguing and picking fights with crew members about not wanting to wear their mask, it's their right no to wear one, blah blah blah. 🙄

FYI, it is my right not to wear one, as well is everyone right who wants to wear one

Then cruising will not be for you anytime soon because I doubt cruise lines will let it slide so easily. Sorry 😀

Completely different than complaining about wearing mask at a superstore.  The people cruising will understand the rules and know that not following protocols will potentially lead to their removal from the ship at their expense.  I know there's always someone but it would be costly mistake.

And it will be the cruise line's right to prevent you from boarding or kicking you off at the next port after confining you to your cabin.

You will agree to give up that right when you board.  The same way you give up your right to smoke in your cabin, conceal carry, or smoke weed (if legal at "home").

Not when you're agreeing to travel using the services of a private company, that can determine what rules you need to abide by.

I'm glad that this level of "don't tell me what to do" was not as entrenched back when restaurants went non-smoking. That's not to say I didn't hear plenty of people vowing (at the top of their lungs, limited capacity as those might have been) that they were leaving and not coming back. Methinks they finally came around, or else have opted for delivery or cooking themselves, lol...

They do that in the stores now so I can see this happening on the ship as well.  I see so many people walking around with their mask covering their mouth and not their nose.  The crew always does their best not to upset the guests so they may tend to look the other way for someone not wearing their mask.

The cruise lines will aggressively enforce the protocols because if they don't they risk another shutdown that would most likely lead to some sort of bankruptcy.

True, the announcement was yesterday for Monday.  I must have been drooling on the keyboard...

I've pulled down my mask to breath better for a minute or two if no one is close to me.

There is such a thing as overdoing it. Here I think teachers are mandated to wear masks even alone from their own homes.

I had to laugh, a mom was on our local  news complaining about how schools were doing real life school. They took her kid to sit in the library at a computer to see a teacher from the teachers home on zoom. Teachers were demanding more rights about in person teaching.

If I'm on a lounge chair on a cruise to read alone, I dont think a mask should be required unless I'm where other people are close.

And that is what I would expect as well.

I would expect masks required at Shows, Comedy Club, when walking through MDR to be seated, all internal thoroughfares (e.g. entire Promenade deck), and any time/place the crowd can get "dense", even on Lido.  Exceptions when eating/drinking.  Which might except the entire Lido, of course...

Unlike US businesses, I don't see where anyone is trying to indemnify cruise lines from covid lawsuits.

I'm pretty sure you won't find that in the Constitution and there are court precedents going back over 100 year.

@wareaglefan444 just a FYI, cruise ships aren’t free countries. You have no rights.

PS: just because the US is a ‘free country’ it does not mean you can skip wearing a mask when required by law or local policy with enforcement.
