The Fleet Report and Daily for Friday October 14th, 2022

I have to admit that I saw the Celebrate Dessert day, and since I celebrate that every day, I started dreaming about desserts.  We did have eggs today.  I made bacon, egg and swiss on rye (one slice each-folded in half).  The cats enjoyed the bacon.....

I finally got DH out of bed, and now i'm off to wash the rest of what the cat tried to ruin.

I hope there's nothing too serious going on with @kazu.  By this time we usually have a new Future Cruise List. Hopefully out picking up her SUV or something.

Sorry, I’m alive but very tied up - will have things up once I get this stuff sorted out.

I would have failed as a spotter during WWII....but I am pretty certain a BHB...Noordam ??...cruised in at sunset last night...a day early as one of several other cruise ships arriving this week... cruised out...

Curious... maybe a medical emergency....??

Good morning. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

I'll keep my hair, but don't mind bald men. Yes to desserts and eggs. Maybe I'll have an omelet for dinner. I like the quote. I'll pass on the meal (fish) and wine. The drink looks good.

I was in Ensenada on my way home from a Princess Hawaii cruise from/to LA.

It's sunny but chilly here. The weatherman mentioned the "S" word for Tuesday; way too early! I'm in-between appointments. The Optometrist thinks my cornea shape has changed with treatment of the corneal cyst and my 2 eyes are so different it's hard to balance them. So my glasses are getting remade at no charge. Then I stopped at Verizon as I had no service on the new phone; only required a network reset. I see the GI person this afternoon.

@msmayor Good for you for taking a day for yourself!

@rafinmd Thanks for maintaining our lists.

@0106 Thanks for the recipes.

Prayers for the Care List, especially those officers and civilians lost to gun violence.

Cheers for the Celebration list.

I will make a version of yesterday's meal suggestion either tonight or tomorrow, but first I need to boil all the remaining green beans. Instead of cooking them yesterday, I roasted cauliflower. Both of today's suggestions would be OK with me if someone else made them.

I learned a little while ago that a co-worker who has been in and out of hospital several times recently is now in ICU and not expected to live past Sunday or Monday. If you're inclined to pray, her name is Fran.

@0106 Great recipes today!  I love croquetas.  Thank you so much for doing the Meal of the Day during my cruise.  It is so nice to be able to relax and not worry about it.

In honor of Dessert Day I had a Bossche Bol today but it was rather disappointing.  The dough was heavy and lumpy and it wasn’t cooked through.  Not much cream filling since the dough was a flop.

A late good morning or an early good afternoon after a somewhat busy morning.  I woke up at 3:45 this morning and could not get back to sleep, so about 5 I got up and read for a while.  It was a chilly 53F this morning, but should be inching to the lower 80s this afternoon with a good south wind.

I like eggs, bald can be liberating for men, but Dessert Day is the one I'll be celebrating today.

I like the Mark Twain quote.  We'll pass on the meal, drink and wine today.

@aliaschief  Bruce, the FB meme is very true.

@msmayor  Good for you on talking a mental health day.

@marshhawk  Annie, that was great that you could get the two museums connected.  Enjoy your concert.

@Rowsby  That is a great picture of the ships, especially the BHB.

@JazzyV  Vanessa, that's good news the optometrist is redoing your new glasses at no cost.  Good luck with the GI doctor this afternoon.

@kochleffel  Fran will be in my thoughts as she nears the end of her life.  I hope she is not in pain and can have a peaceful end of life.

@dish  Debbie, I'm sorry about the Bossche Bol.  We split on in the Dutch Cafe on Koningsdam, and I was a little disappointed too.  It was so cold, the dough was tough and hard to cut, and could have used more filling.  It was not nearly as good as the small ones they used to serve on Dutch Night in the MDR.

A quick update on DH is that he's doing well but his right leg, which was fairly numb before the surgery is completely numb now.  That makes it fairly impossible to move the leg and walking more challenging.  Yesterday walking to his chair he did good, but after sitting 2 1/2 hours, getting back to bed was not as easy.  Lesson learned is don't sit that long for now.

We've done a little research about this and he talked to the nurse in the doctor's office today.  Anesthesia can cause numbness, plus the nerve that controls the right leg is moved around during the procedure which irritates the nerve.  It can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for the numbness to go away.  Hopefully, after the second procedure, the pressure from the spinal stenosis will be gone and things will slowly begin to clear up.  In the meantime, we're muddling along as best we can.  it is just a long, slow healing process, and both of us are short on patience.

We've been to Ensenada at least six times, with our most recent two stops last March on Koningsdam.  Our first time there in 2012 on Golden Princess, we did not get off the ship, because or tablemates told us it was not worth seeing.  Beginning with our Veendam stop in 2014, we have gone into town all but one or two stops.  Last March I went in the day we were there all day, but the next time we stayed on the ship.

In 2014, because Veendam could not stop in Lahaina due to rough seas, Captain Peter Bos, headed to Ensenada with arrival timed for an afternoon and evening there.  Since we had more daytime in port, we took a tour of the town and to La Bufadora, the blow hole.  Our first stop was an old hotel or maybe it was an old night club that has been restored and has become the civic center.

This year, instead of the shuttle dropping us off near the middle of the shopping street, the shuttle stopped at an old building that is being restored near the far end of the main street.  The area looked a little dodgy when we left the building so I attached myself to a group of people until we got to the main street.

In March 2012, the sealions were gathered on the rocks near the ship and boy were they "talking".

Another time, they were swimming near the ship, so they were quieter.

This year, we were at a different dock in the same complex where we have always docked.  The building was closed except for going through security. The grounds around the building were nice.

From my two years in Mrs. Jerauld's Spanish classes I translate that to "Black Market."  I guess they much more open about those activities in Ensenada than they are here in Alta California.

I have made a handful of cruise stops in Ensenada, and I do enjoy walking around the town, but I can't recall ever seeing that sign.

Today is Be Bald and Free Day, National Dessert Day, and World Egg Day

I am bald but, definitely, not free.  Some may call me cheap.  Fair enough.

Mrs. XBGuy is the best.  And she is endearing.  She does view things a bit differently,  She once told me she had difficult spelling "desert" (hot arid place) and "dessert"  (sweet thing) until she realized that "desert" has one ess and "dessert" has two esses.  Since she likes desserts more than she likes deserts, it is obvious which one has more esses.

It was a bagel and cream cheese breakfast for me today.  The World Egg Day celebration will have to wait.

Good morning friends!  It's a chilly 45F but will be sunny and 75 later on.  Next week we will see some lows in the 30's which is shocking!  I want fall to stay and winter to stay away until at least January.

Thanks to Rich @richwmnfor the Daily and Fleet Report.  Hope you are having a wonderful time on that cruise Rich along with all the other Dailyites.  We did have a bald day recently but Be Bald and Free sounds fun for some.  (please not me!)  Love my desserts, and am a fan of eggs too.   Another salted fish menu suggestion.  I have to pass on that.  The martini sounds okay but I don't know about the wine.  Ensenada, Mexico is a stop on many Hawaii cruises.  I've been there twice on Princess Hawaii cruises in 2007 and 2009.  Many people don't even get off the ship!  This is the first time Ensenada has been our port of the day.

Thanks Roy @rafinmdfor the Care and Celebration lists.  I'll have your alternate menu suggestion though!  It's sad we have to even discuss the wave of police killings.  I heard yesterday that there have been 12 police officers killed since MONDAY!  All due to anti-police rhetoric and "progressive" district attorneys/prosecutors and judges.  This has to stop!  Prayers for all of the fallen police officers and their families and colleagues.  Prayers also for the remainder of the Care list, my neighbor Linda who is still not home, and the people affected by the hurricanes and the attacks on Ukrainians.  Cheers to the large group of Dailyites on cruises, and others celebrating good news.

I will happily celebrate National Dessert Day and World Egg Day, no on bald and free at least for myself. I would love those Croquetas as long as someone else prepared them and would certainly enjoy the wine of the day with the Croquetas. Roy's alternativel meal looks wonderful also, maybe I am hungry. Got my Covid jab and flu shot both on Thursday. Both arms were somewhat sore yesterday but both are fine now. I have been to Ensenada several times and thank you to all who posted their lovely photos.  At the Civic Center I saw folkloric show on 3 seperate occassions, all were HAL excursions.

Prayers for all who need them,  and for some who don't realize their need.

Like Gilligan, today we set off on a three-hour tour. Two differences: 1. It was a road trip, and 2. We returned.

I needed to go to an artist's shop about an hour away to pick up the grandkids' Christmas ornaments. It's our tradition to give each an ornament every year. That way, when they have their own first tree, it may not be as bare as ours was starting out.

(Shhh! Don't tell them, but this year's ornament commemorates a nearby National Park and its sand dunes that they love to climb when in Michigan.)

Afterward, we enjoyed a leisurely trip home enjoying the stunning fall colors, taking a drive past our former Lake Michigan ridgetop home, and making a stop for the pizza we still crave after moving away six years ago.

It was a lovely three-hour tour but, upon arriving home, we acknowledged that our downtown condo in a walkable neighborhood less than a mile from a great regional hospital is the right place for us.

Now, if I could only get that pizzeria to move closer...

I believe I asked this before but did not get an answer.   Does HAL have a recommended hotel in San Diego.   If so is it walkable to the pier?

It has been three year since I cruised from San Diego, but HAL used to use the Sheraton near the airport. It is quite a walk to the terminal/pier from there, but an easy taxi/Uber ride.

There are two very good hotels across from the pier/terminal: the Wyndham and the Residence Inn. The Wyndham is just a wee bit closer - walking wise.

God afternoon everyone.I’ve been very busy the last few days and I forget to come back here and post. Today I got good news and I don’t need cataract surgery yet. I was talking to someone in Ft. Meyers’s yesterday and she said she was going to her last funeral because of Ian.Her friends son drowned in his home. The devastation there is still awful.

Watching the verdicts yesterday for the Parkland School Shooting in Florida a few years ago. We were then when that happened. I find it so hard to understand all the school and church and temple shootings.

Stay safe everyone,

Carol
