Does anyone prefer interior cabins?

I find it interesting that there has been very little mention of our favorite (by far) type of cabin: oceanviews.  We much prefer them to balconies.  We do like seeing and feeling the sea, and OVs are closer to the sea than balconies.

We've been in inside cabins several times, and did not find them claustrophobic or unpleasant, nor smaller than other cabins.  We've been known to leave the cabin tv on all night, muted, if we want to know when it's daylight or if we are in port.

Any time a ship is sailing full, it's obvious that many, many people have chosen to avail themselves of the inside cabins.

We have booked oceanview cabins for most of our cruising career.  They offer natural light didn't cost much more than an interior.

The folks who are frugal, are usually looking for value. If the there's no value in higher category cabins (regardless of how nice they are or great experience they've had), they'll still book insides.

Of course they will.

But for those who believe that watching and hearing the seas go by on your balcony, enjoying a nice sunrise or sunset from a balcony,  reading a book with a cup of coffee on a balcony, or enjoying a port arrival from a balcony...an inside cabin would never be an option...regardless of saving a few bucks.  In some cases, we've booked a balcony for only $200 or so over an inside cabin - no contest.

A cruise experience is just that...and doing so inside 4 walls for 1/3 of the time on board without a view is pretty much impossible.

Happy cruising.

I will choose an inside over an Oceanview every single time. I will also choose an inside over a balcony on short cruises, and never would I stay in a Boardwalk/CP balcony. The only thing I will always choose over the interior, is a JS... which luckily, those are mostly what I have booked now.

I have been given comp OV & Balconies in the past from the casino, and downgraded them to inside. I tend to stay up late, and I really like how dark and quiet they are, and how easy they are to keep ice cold. Just my preference.

I must admit that this is the first time ever I've heard of anyone downgrading to an inside cabin voluntarily.  Enjoy.

I would have to try it before I wrote it off but from the video it seems too enclosed for me. Reminds me of driving in a car with the window down.

Interesting. I actually thought it looked more open than a "normal" balcony room, because of the ability to completely open the doors between the room and the balcony.

Yeah, there is no reason for light to come in and wake me up, when I cannot even get fresh air from it... I will never stay in an OV., the curtains are not enough to block out all the light.

I have downgraded a couple balconies due to location that I was not a fan of. (Boardwalk/CP, and one time right under a restaurant that I found noisy on a previous cruise) The JS is the only one I will not downgrade for any reason.

Yes .true but it's the height that seems off to me. For some reasons it seems low. I'm only 5'4" so it's probably not an issue for me but I would probably be looking through the glass which usually gets cloudy from the salt water.  I'm not a fan of the chairs either. I prefer something with a higher back to rest my head.

If the Edge had the itinerary that I was looking for and the price wasn't ridiculous I would be willing to give it a try.

I just reviewed  the video. It's the walls that throw it off.  It's very closed in and doesn't give the appearance of being outside. On a positive note it very private for those members of the balcony club.

That's a new one.  My wife is a light sleeper, and has never said this was an issue...in fact she prefers to sleep closest to the balcony. The faint sound of water going by (even with the glass doors closed) helps her sleep she's said numerous times. On the other hand...sleeping in an inner cabin reminds us of confined tent camping...and you can even open up the flaps on those...

To each their own of course.

That said, once most cruisers that have experienced a real balcony or suite...there's probably <1% chance they'd ever NOT book a balcony or above again. Just sayin'.

I'm guessing you didn't do well in stats.  We know plenty of people who cruise on a tight budget.  If they happen to get the chance to splurge they may, but, it's just that a splurge, not a change of lifestyle.  The dollar has a very powerful impact for some.

Interior cabins make more sense to us. We do book balconies if I need to work remotely more than one day  (we cruise 5-6 a year around holidays and sometimes my vacations days are up), if not we mostly book interiors. Our reason is we LOVE cruising and on the ship to explore ship and everything it has to offer, so we extremely rare in our cabin. Almost never. All times we had balconies we maybe used them only several times. Swimming wear dries much faster on balcony which I love, but it is not enough to book it.

No way I could ever get my wife in one. Shes claustrophobic.
Would never consider it.

I am claustrophobic, however out of 47 cruises with 8 companies we had insides about 35 times. Never experienced claustrophobia during cruises. In majority of claustrophobia cases real reason is fear of suffocation. However ships have amazing ventilation systems so this is not a problem.

For me it's not a tight budget, it's the value perspective.  Extra room (JS and above) doesn't really add value for me and I don't use a balcony often (too cool, too hot, rather be on deck, etc.).  I pretty much take the same approach when buying a new car.  Don't need a Rolls or Bentley when a Toyota gets me from point A to B in reasonable comfort.

Had a 2 BR Grand Suite (free upgrade from 2 OV cabins), but would never pay the going price for one.

After the GS, my next cruises were Bal guar, Inside Guar (free upgrade to OV), Inside, OV, OV.  Future cruise are Inside (VB) and OV.

For me, balconies are the Toyotas and insides are AMC Gremlins. 😁

And for my fellow Canadians;

For me, balconies are the Toyotas and insides are Lada's. 😊

(The Soviet made Lada's were never exported to the U.S. , lucky you!)

We only cruise in inside cabins. We have over 500 nights on Princess and over 300 on RCCL plus about 70 nights on Celebrity. We will not accept a balcony and we have definite reasons besides cost. We have refused free upgrades to balconies.

Inside cabins have the bed going perpendicular to the ship axis. Balconies run with the bed parallel to the ship axis. If it gets a little rough, we roll out of bed in balcony where we are "rocked to sleep" in inside cabins.....With a balcony you can never shut the light out completely from the slider.

with a balcony cabin the TV is way off to the side so it is very uncomfortable to watch. Now as to that balcony....We simply never use the darned thing. We are out and about around the ship. Lastly, and much less important to us is that we have spent less on 75 cruises than many have spent on 20 cruises.

If you enjoy the balcony, more power to you, but if you think the only reason one would take an inside cabin is to save money.....you are missing the boat.

A wise man once told us....If you can't afford taking an enjoyable trip - it's likely not worth it at any price.

A balcony is not a splurge for most folks, which is why there are so many on the mid to larger cruise ships - it's an expectation.

They just settle for one....

Speak for yourself. I actually do, and I don’t need to explain to you or anyone else why I don’t like balconies.

I have had two interior cabins in my history.  They will likely be the only ones i ever have.  I prefer balconies although I spend very little time on them.  It is is DW.  I just like the extra space that balcony cabins have.

I've cruised in an interior twice. First time I was young and enjoyed the "cheap" price.  Second just tried again to see if it would be something I could do going forward.  Answer ....No.  Love my own little balcony too much. I have to say we called them sleeping pods. The dark is very conducive to good sleep.
