Error in Deluxe Beverage package pricing?

Package pricing fluctuates all the time -- how is anyone to know what's a technical error?  Willing to bet they don't refund anyone who bought a $500 cabana for $1300.  Funny how the $18 glitch was fixed but I can still see that $1300 rate this morning.

When the alcohol package is less than the non-alcohol one, it should be a sign that something is wrong.  The cabana for $1,300 is accurate.  Ones we booked for $500 a long time ago are now available for close to that price.

All that being said, it is another sign that RC needs to hire better qualified IT staff to run their systems. They seem to be having different IT issues too frequently.

Edit to add:  RC’s pricing and fake sales are all so common how does anyone ever know if it really is or not.🤔

Reminds me of two different stories.

1. A friend called me up and said "Amazon is selling header back Magnaflow exhaust for 60s mustangs for $80.  So I opened up the browser, click buy it, and 2 days later it showed up at my door.  The whole time I expected it to be cancelled right up until it arrived since I knew it was a $480-500 kit that was priced wrong and was corrected in MINUTES on the site.  Never a single contact from the company, they made the mistake, they moved on...lessons learned 😉

2. My friend logged into Jegs and bought a super charger for $1.18.  They shipped it and he has it.  Then they called him, told it was a mistake and politely asked him to return it or pay some additional money to them (politely).  Normal price was $4,000 and change.  Now he's all bent out of shape and twisted up inside because of morality.  I told him send it back, you knew it was the wrong price, they may have shipped it, but it is obviously so bad they called to try and recover from it.

Why do I bring these up....I don't know...it's early for me and my fingers were bored.   Here's hoping my booking flies under the radar and doesn't get cancelled 😉

I agree. The price was up there for hours. People called and booked it through there agents. Some people questioned it. Like myself. And was told they had to honor the listed price.

Royal should honor the price. People who usually wouldn’t purchase a drink package did. They still made money.

By not formally addressing their mistake and going through and deleting all posts that said they would honor the price makes them look shady.

I think part of the reason people were under the impression that it was real is because it was listed as a special offer.  My purchase says "Drink Package Special Offer" and not just the standard drink package.  Just a thought though.

Ouch, I had not though of that!  You know what else will be a problem?  What about people that had to cancel prior purchased packages to buy at this rate and now the rate is at $50 a day?  If they paid say, $46 a day before will Royal honor that price or will they have to re-buy at the current price?  🤔

That is my current worry.  We had it for $44/day and cancelled and rebooked over the phone for the $18 price.  Agent checked and said it was a special deal.

We were booked on Norwegian free at sea and were thinking of canceling and coming to Royal. The big motivator for Booking Norwegian was the free drink package. Seeing they had an $18 drink package on Royal we quickly jumped ship and canceled the Norwegian Cruise and booked with Royal. Ihope Royal honors it.

Asking for a friend...😉

Did your friend ever say how much more they wanted for the super charger?  At the right price it would still be worth keeping. I love blowers.

yes you can get the discount on the ship.  I normally buy our pkg once on the ship as I get 30% off for being D+.  So unless the online price goes to at least 30% off, I always wait until we board to buy the package

Understood, I was referring to my hypothetical coupon

We booked an Oasis Lagoon cabana just a few days ago for $500.  The cabanas at the water park are still the same price as they were a few days ago, at $600 (slightly more as they include water park passes). And this lovely article mentions that the range is to $569: https://www.cruisecritic.com/articles.cfm?ID=4135

The Coco Beach cabanas cost that much, but for the others, it's an error. 🙂

You cancelled a NCL cruise over a few hours price glitch on Royal?

It sounded like they were trying to get him to cover the cost only because it was like $1800 or so they were asking for

Good question..I’m sitting here rooting for the deal to hold up, but that seems extreme.

Where'd you find it for a Nov 2020 cruise!  I've been wanting to add it to mine (also Nov 2020) but it says nothing is available yet.

Got it for Nov 26 Jewel

That's what I was saying.  How can they say it was a glitch when their pricing is all over the place anyhow.

We were already considering the move. I posted about it on Sunday on this forum because of the reviews regarding the pool areas and other things we loved about Royal that we were not sure we would get with the cruise we had picked with Norwegian. To be honest I had picked the Norwegian Cruise because of itinerary and free at sea offer. It was quickly chosen because the day I decided it was time to start looking at booking another cruise the free at sea offer was supposedly ending that night according to the little countdown clock.  Our group decided to book very quickly to get that deal. After it was booked I began digging into my research and started to feel like it wasn’t going to be a good fit for us so came back and started researching Royal again as that was the cruise we had a blast on a couple of years ago. Yesterday we decided to make the jump and the $18 drink offer was a huge bonus. From a free at sea offer to $18 a day for a ship we all know we will ❤️. Why wouldn’t we go for it!

I’d have paid that. Nothing beats the sound of a blower. Trackhawk and 2006 Ford GT driver speaking from first hand experience.

It’s a gray area. As I said if this were $0.18 this would be a different conversation. $18  is a REALLY low price but it’s not cartoonishly low...its at least conceivable as a flash sale. Certainly they can reverse the price..whether that’s the right thing to do or not I’m not sure. I can see the arguments both ways.

The actual price isn't the real question. It is whether a mistake was made. Can RCCL show that the person doing the data entry put in the wrong number or put the wrong field in the wrong field.

In general, contracts consist of three elements 1) offer 2) acceptance 3) consideration. All of these are present in this situation. They posted the price, people bought it and credit cards were charged. One of the things that invalidate a contract are material mistakes. In this case, people bought the package because of the advertised price. This mistake is the reason RCCL can invalidate the purchase legally.

What isn't a valid reason for cancelling a contract is the fact that it will cost one party money to execute the contract. RCCL can't come back and say that $18( or .18) is too low a price because the cost of liquor is higher. Would they be able to rescind on a contract if the price of rum or tequila sky rocketed and their costs changed? Most likely no for anyone already purchased.

Additionally the bad impression on RCCL's image may be the most powerful aspect at play here. If the packages are cancelled the potential news stories that RCCL is doing this to their customers. People who are not "loyal to Royal" might take their undecided cruise purchase to other companies because of this perceived indifference to customer.

Time will tell.

So now what will RCI do about those who cancelled a package they previously bought during a sale, let's say for $44, in order to to get the $18 deal, and now the package price for their cruise is up to $57?  After cancelling the $18 deal, will RCI reinstate that $44 package sale to the customer, or tell those guests "oh well, you gambled and lost" and now have to pay $57 to get the package?  I think we know the answer.

NCL has been charging $138.60 per person for 7 day sailings for a long time, there is no reason that RCCL cannot honor that price. As someone who has sailed NCL for years I would have no reason to think $148.46 would be a “glitch”. RCCL should bite the bullet and honor the pricing that they themselves said was correct on multiple forms of social media. The company will not go broke over it.  It is fine that they made a mistake but not honoring their mistake is a much bigger mistake and will make others think twice about “jumping ship” to them in the future. Word of mouth on CC, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram go a long way. They should know that and just suck up their error.

That's gratuities only on a $99 pp/pd package chosen as a booking perk, not the total package price.

The total package price for 7 nights is $831.60.

Mainly because it was "too good to be true".  I never believed it for a second so I didn't even bother going out to get it.  People need to realize the social media people have no more clue than the booking agents for RCI.  They have to get their info from what they see on the screen and then from higher ups after someone realizes the mistake.  I'm just amazed that people believed it.

I agree their IT has a history of issues and all the more reason to know this was likely a error “glitch”.

All the more reason for them to hire someone who can run a website.
