Morning Rich

Noordam is scheduled to depart San Pedro/L.A. for open sea this morning - her captain, Eric, (who I worked for on several contracts) has ordered a pilot for a 09:30 AM PST departure. Could be a little later since they're waiting for a "package" from San Diego. I'm heading out there to take some pics (it's a nice day again after some 25-35 knots winds yesterday PM and into the evening) and will try to capture the toots 😉 the captain has promised me, on video - see ya

Roy's picture of a "raft" of penguins aboard the Prinsendam got me thinking about what a group of penguins is usually called: (like a flock of crows is called a murder of crows).  I found that while in the water, a group of penguins is called a raft of penguins, but on land, a group of penguins is called a waddle of penguins.  Sounds appropriate and hope Roy doesn't think I am nit picking.

Good morning all!  Great collection of days today, and Chenin Blanc is one of my favorite wines.   I hope to see penguins on our bucket list Antarctic cruise in 2022 or 2023 that we hope to be booking any time now. Yes, after seeing the photos here, we can't wait to do that cruise.

It's been a crazy couple days, first DD snagged the Feb. 1Tacoma vaccination appointments for us, and now she got us in at Swedish in Seattle on Tuesday!  So a bit closer and earlier.  Our clinic just started opening up appointments for group 1b this morning and within a couple minutes all appointments for the week were taken.  They will be doing this weekly as they get their weekly supply. I am happy to see the demand though!

It should be a good day, we'll be visiting our grandsons (outside 'round the firepit).

Good morning, all! I enjoy butter crunch and cheese, and have two small penguins in the guest room that were pillow gifts from the 2020 GWV. Being in our luggage left on board, those penguins travelled far and wide for months after we were confined to home!

And happy Inauguration Day to our friends south of the border!
Yesterday we booked our first non- cruise trip in years. We booked a 16 day South Africa and Botswana safari tour, with a couple of days at Victoria Falls. It’s late November this year, so my fingers are crossed. When we go back a year later on the Grand Africa, our only duplicate will be Capetown.

A year ago today was our second day in Rio de Janeiro on the Amsterdam. The day before was a long tour day, so we wandered and did our own thing. There is a light rail train right in front of the cruise terminal that takes a pretty trip along the waterfront to downtown. If you accidentally transfer to,the wrong one, it takes you through questionable parts of the city before emerging back at the tourist zone of the waterfront. Who knew. It was a fun day, and I was sorry to,say goodbye to Rio. The link to my blog about today is here https://apassportinmyparasol.wordpress.com/2020/01/22/adeus-rio-de-janeiro-day-2-january-20-2020/

Here are some pictures of the day, and a couple more from our tour the day before.

And of course, Happy Wednesday from the Amsterdam elevators!

From our cabin window on Dolphin Deck. This is why in the water they are called a ‘raft’ of penguins!

Good morning everyone!  Thank you for the Daily Rich. Love the combo of days. I feel really embarrassed to say I had to look up buttercrunch. Looks like toffee and the King Arthur recipe said it was good over ice cream..... YUM!  And cheese?  That’s my day and my desert island food. I couldn’t live without cheese in my life. I have been known to order the cheese plate for dessert at dinner on HAL. I also order it if the seas are rocking and rolling.

Both meal suggestions sound good, we love steak around here but I have a pork tenderloin in the fridge that I need to use. I saw an Alton Brown recipe for pork Wellington that looks easy that I just might make.

Thank you for your list Roy and all the contributions of everyone!  Love all the penguins! Have a great day!

Love the penguin pictures.  We always enjoyed our cruises that included penguins.

Thank you for all the updates.  Looking forward to a much quieter day than yesterday.  Weather is changing.  Maybe even get some snow between Sunday and Monday.  Not holding my breath..a lot can change between now and then.

Have an awesome day everyone.  Wear those masks.

So, as a pick me up and to celebrate cheese day, I think we’ll have lobster Mac and Cheese tonight.  I’ll be using Disney’s recipe.  If anyone wants it, let me know and I’m happy to share.

I would love for you to share this recipe!  Thank you in advance!

Good Morning Everyone!

Penguins make me smile, funny birds!  Today my memory feed cane up with a picture of hubby and I swimming with the stingrays in Grand Cayman 2 years ago on this date!  Sure wish we were there this year.

Yesterday, I took Dad to VA clinic for his Covid shot.  Sure wish they were set up to also do families at the same time.  The odd thing is that they were only doing "ten" veterans each day as the multi dose vial hold 10 doses.  These veterans had to be pre-scheduled.  Several others who came in for dr appointments and lab work asked, but were declined.  It is just so difficult for many of these folks to get around and into the clinic, just hate to see them have to make additional "trips" and only doing 10 per day is going to take forever to get them done!

Stay safe!

Good morning, at least it's morning in AZ.  I am late today due to watching the ceremony at the US Capitol.  No matter who you supported, we can all celebrate that the ceremony took place without an incident.

Finally, we have gotten rain, 🌧️ about 1/3 of an inch.  In the desert, this is a lot of rain at one time.  There are predictions for more rain today and tomorrow, but who knows.  We have also had two power outages, one lasting just a few minutes and the other lasting about 26 minutes.

I also waited to post until I could get on the computer as I wanted to share a few pictures of the penguins on The Falkland Islands in 2015.  The majority were gathered on the beach ready to turn the waddle into a raft.  There were a few, mostly young ones and those molting, who were not ready to leave.

On that cruise, we had planned to go see the penguin colony in Punta Arenas.  Before we got there, there was an announcement that the penguins left there two weeks early.  At least, we got pictures of some of the ones in The Falklands.

👍 🐧My husband and I have been fortunate to have viewed penguins in many different settings. A memorable one was the Penguin Parade on Phillips Island. We have seen larger penguins in both Chile and Argentina, as well as the Falkland Islands, New Zealand, Maui (Hyatt Regency in HI, LOL !👀) and Antarctica. Galapagos is still on the Bucket List! 🙏

I am late saying thank you to the Daily because I've been glued to the TV watching a very memorable Inauguration of our new President and Madame VP.....btw from my Home State of California! 😃

January 20, 2013

Dallman Bay, Cuverville Island, Paradise Harbor, Antarctica

My journal reflects waking early to the ship pitching happily along with lots of shippy, creaky sounds that made the cabin extra cozy. I was also one of the lucky ones to get one of the limited edition cinnamon rolls from Explorations, which paired nicely with a latte. (The late) Dr. Chris Wilson had a lecture on penguins which was interesting.

As we were unable to visit Ushuaia, we completed our transit of Drake Passage in the morning and got an extra half day in Antarctica. When we boarded one of our roll call members had scheduled a CC lunch in the MDR at noon, as it was originally a sea day. (Incidentally, someone said they arrived at their cabin the night before and found several people standing at the door, looking at their “penguin invitation” hanging there.)

We ended up arriving in Antarctica a little later than expected due to fog, and as our luncheon was winding up. On deck, the weather appeared to change from minute to minute as we approached the land. At one point, the sky was blue and filled with white clouds. A little later, it was dark with mist and low hanging clouds drifting downward to lightly touch the water.

We sailed through Dallman Bay and past Cuverville Island where there was a large bird colony.

bDSC_0050.thumb.jpg.e02735e948163a08b774a2bcf5755a12.jpg

Further along the peninsula we sailed, past ice choked water, show covered glaciers that met the water, past steep rocks that cropped out of the water almost straight up, appearing to be pushed down by the snow coverings above them. Ice- slush, small pieces the size of large refrigerators, others the size of truck- dotted the water. Some would brush our hull, making scraping and thudding sounds.

We entered Paradise Harbor where there was a Chilean Research station. Some of the inhabitants were working on a boat that wat was tied to the dock. A few had climbed up near the roof and were waving a Chilean flag on a long pole. I,s sure we were a novelty in that lonely cove.

Their research station and home was amid a large penguin colony. They could literally open the door and touch a penguin. We cruised by slowly and got a good whiff of penguin poo. It started to snow again while we were in Paradise Bay, and the snow and low clouds set a very remote, lonely, yet hauntingly beautiful tone to the afternoon.

After a lovely dinner with the couple that were our roll call leaders, I changed back to “rugged up” and returned to the deck to soak in more of the beauty of this land. Then the fog curtain lowered, and we headed back to the safety of the open sea for the night.

It was really nice to see crew members freely up on deck taking pictures and enjoying the cruising.
