Visa required for Americans traveling to EU starting in 2024?

Recommended Posts

Just saw this on tv..and online

Planning a trip to Europe? You'll need to apply for 'authorization' starting in 2024. (NEXSTAR) – Starting in 2024, all Americans heading to Europe will have an extra step – and an extra fee

(apparently does not  apply to Non  EU nations..)

wonder if this will affect travel/ cruisers from USA yet another step...US citizens are.already  experiencing long delays for Passports !

Really has nothing to do with the Visa---unless one doesn't already have the PP.

yes 2 sep issues,  but some folks have had to forego their  trips due to months long Passport delays.

Glad we are sticking close to home these days..travel not as easy as it used to be, esp as we get older!

Have you read the rest of this thread? Registering will be an online process and should be no big deal. The similar processes for Australia and New Zealand take about 10 minutes to complete online. Authorization normally takes less than 3 days - Ours arrived in a few hours of submitting online.

We had the same experience with the Australian version (notice received in an hour!) while our New Zealand version - which was applied for on-line since the App wasn't working - took 24 hours for my DH and about 48 hours for me.  The process was very straightforward.

The EU has been talking about ETIAS for a long time, and it just keeps getting delayed year after year. Just because they say it'll be implemented in 2024 doesn't mean much.

Yes, this goes back quite a while. We are cruising in Europe next month on a cruise we originally booked way back in 2001. We thought we would need this, but it was delayed, and not for the first time.

Interested to see some clear and accurate details on disqualifications.

A time frame for old non-violent offenses, handling of DUI’s (like Canada?).

So far I gather: terrorism obviously, significant exclusions related to drugs, no more than three years past incarceration.

But lots of gray areas with everything else.

"Only" is not quite the right term if you ask me. ETIAS will be required by the majority of countries in Europe, and many of the countries that aren't using ETIAS are the ones less-visited by tourists (not talking UK or Ireland of course, but places Belarus, Ukraine, North Macedonia, Albania, and places like that). The vast majority of countries a cruiser or other holiday-goer to Europe will visit will require an ETIAS.

Your post is mostly correct. But The Republic of Ireland is an EU member so ETIAS will be needed to visit all but the small portion of the Island still occupied.

ETIAS is not an EU but Schengen Area arrangement.
Ireland is not part of Schengen - hence no need for ETIAS when visiting Ireland.

All EU countries are not part of Schengen and some non EU countries are.

The list of countries you provided does not include Ireland either.

Do they also check this on cruise ships?  I can't remember for sure but I  thin when I boarded Serenity in 2020 they checked for Australia and perhaps New Zealand ETA's.

Roy

We have to apply for ESTA to visit the USA and we've had to print copies of the authorised ESTA for the cruise company when doing Transatlantic cruises. We get an email notification from the cruise company that it's a requirement and it's always asked for when documents are checked at embarkation.

I didn't realize this would affect Europe cruises as of January. Looks to be around $8 per person (children and over age 70 free) and hopefully not hard to do.

this is relevant for cruisers from the UK too

we must get one for European cruises next year

7 Euros, lasts 3 years, application online & to do at least 96hrs before travel

here is link to info for UK passport holders….

Hopefully we follow suit and charge Europeans

You already do and have done so for several years.  All UK and EU citizens need an ESTA to travel to the US which is obtained before travel and involves photos and finger printing on arrival.

Maybe the UK should charge US citizens?

Not "as of January"  The page you link to says "in 2024" but the truth is they have postponed the start day several times and as of now they haven't set a new start date beyond this vague "in 2024" placeholder.

If you click on the "application" link at the top of that page, it takes you to this page, which allows you to sign up for "updates on the ETIAS launch date" from this UNOFFICIAL website.
