What kind of reaction do you expect from your family and friends when you tell them you are on one of the first cruises?

I didnt mention my parents are 94 and 101.

My uncle and auntie just about raised me.   He lived to  100 1/2 and for the last 5 years of his life worried something was going to happen to me.  I checked in with them twice a day.   I imagine your dad will be very worried.  But maybe not.

Oh he will. He worries about things that arent even rational. He turns 102 sept 3rd, wwII vet. My mom showed him she had a whole cabinet of food so he would quit worrying. The newspapers tend to scare you if that's all you hear about the virus. Old people dying, empty shelves in stores etc. Lol he wants me to social distance in their house.

Tbh if I cruise I will probably do a semi quarantine from them afterwards. Like leave groceries in the garage or something, stay my distance further away.

My friend thought I was nuts going on my last cruise back in February, before the world fell apart.

She did not know that I had one planned to take her in October.  I cancelled her and am taking my husband instead😇

If it sails

Can i be your new friend?😷

Lol my parents live near me, thanks good we dont live together. I didnt mention my parents are 94 and 101. My deaf dad just keeps talking at me, cant hear a word I say. He is sure the hearing aide doctor switched out his hearing aid when he sent it off to get fixed. Hes complained several times if the dallas  morning news doesnt quit shrinking the size of the newsprint he is going to stop subscribing.

Lol please dont wish it on me he finds out why I'm gone. He cant hear tv news so he gets all his virus news from the newspaper. He read we might have a food shortage and told me to go out and buy canned peaches, so I did. We are set for anything the virus brings. They havent left their house since this started. We are so grateful they live in a big house and not in assisted living.

Tell my dad? Nope nope nope, not me. My dad really would worry a lot about me.

So understand what you are saying! When my Dad was alive he hated us going away so we used to tell him about a week before we went, I know my kids will give us a hard time if we cruise this year with the virus fear, they used to carry on when we cruised anywhere there had been the slightest unrest.

Friends as well have told us they know we won’t be cruising for years 😂hope to be sailing all five we have booked so far for next year!Stay safe and keep your dreams.

We're supposed to cruise in November so here's to hoping it's not one of the first cruises if for no other reason than it will be reflection of what's happening in the world around us.

Oh yes I remember those days well.  Uncle wanted me to move in with them after my first husband died.  I was 42.  He said I could sleep on the screened in porch.   It was perfectly rational to him because I would be there 24 hours a day!

They don’t have any rules about us traveling to Disney though...which seems equally risky for us...

This is what I find funny about the whole fear of cruising.  The same people that would think you are crazy for wanting to go on a cruise are some of the same people that can't wait to travel themselves.  I'd risk saying you have as much of if not a  better chance of picking the virus up travelling anywhere else.  Do you really think social distancing is going to work at a casino or Disney or a beach or any vacation spot for that matter?  Just take a look at the news from Lake of the Ozarks over the weekend.  Cruise lines are easy targets because they make easy headlines for the media.  You have an exact count the people on a cruise; You can't count the number of people on a beach.

We have some friends & family who are absolutely paranoid about catching the virus.  Others who are a little more relaxed, still cautious, just not paranoid.  They all know how much we like to cruise and I have no doubt some will disapprove when we start cruising again.

But we are paying attention to what is happening with the virus, are exercising caution when we do go out, and will determine for ourselves what we want to do and when we want to do it!

With how I am, no one dares says anything to me.  They know I will clap back with some comment and they don't want to get in it with me 🙂

I guess you're taking the piss out of everyone but I'm sure you'd be an interesting member of a cruise dinner table.

I expect the reaction from my friends to be jealousy and envy.  My friends are reasonable people. My sister's reaction will be panic and condemnation.  My sister's name is Karen.

Hahahahaha. Well that says it all doesn't it?

Good question!

We live in New York City, the epicenter of the virus, as do two of our children.  Our third lives in Seattle, where COVID-19 first came to America.  We have seen hundreds die all around us and understand that this is not a joke or "fake news."

What would our kids say?

"What are you nuts?"

End of story!

For those of us who intend to cruise soon after it resumes, have you thought about what you are likely to hear from your family and friends when you tell them?  I don’t expect good wishes from everyone, at the very least.  Maybe not anyone!  I am thinking about telling my sister, so somebody in the family knows where to reach me in case of emergency, but not mentioning it to my adult sons until I return.

It's funny how the table gets turned with age.  When this all started I couldn't keep my 87 yr old father in the house.

you could be one right now.

Highly doubt it !

My husband and I are closely complying to the Stay-at-home guidelines for NY state.

We go to the market every two weeks for groceries, wearing masks and gloves, making sure to keep social distance.

We go for rides in the car  to one of our local beaches, wearing masks and keeping social distance if we should see anyone come into our walking range.

We keep in touch with family and friends with phone calls, texts and video chats.

We are making virtual visits without doctors instead of going to their offices.

      What we don’t do...

We haven’t gone to church, played golf or visited with friends either in their homes or ours. We do not go to our local pharmacy, they deliver both prescriptions and OTC medications to us.

We do not go to the post office,we purchase stamps online and our mail is both picked up and delivered by our mail delivery person.

We did not travel to Bermuda in early March because of the effects the virus may have had for us during that vacation.

We are not eager to travel by plane or cruise ship for a very long time.

Just as yogimax posted,we understand that this virus is no joke, neither is it fake news. Living on Long Island ( one of the last regions in NY to attempt Phase 1 of reopening soon) we are well aware of what this dastardly virus can do.

When we see photos of people at crowded pools and beaches in states that have opened without following the CDC guidelines,we cannot understand how people are comfortable being in these places. It is disheartening to say the least.

I have so noticed this with my mom. She’s like a teenager, in her 70s.

I would go anyway.  I don’t want to have to explain what will be done to make cruising safer, I prefer to tell them about it after the fact, when I can describe what was done.

Maybe you can call them and explain your reasons while you are stuck in your quarantined cabin waiting for a port to let you disembark.  You will have plenty of time on your hands.😀

LOL!  I'm definitely interesting.  I'm not mean, just have a spine of steel and very much fierce.  My brain to mouth filter doesn't always work.  But when you do what I do, you have to be this way. 🙂  I do have a great sense of humor.

The short answer is I do not care what they think. I am an adult and can do as I believe is best for my wife and me. We have booked a cruise for the week of Thanksgiving and are looking forward to it and that is all that matters.

Told the kids, they asked where we had put our Will and who was the executor🤫

We are both in Healthcare professions, we both know the risks, so closer to the cruise date we will assess the risks again.

Not sure if the kids were serious, might have to revisit the lawyer!!!!
