Good morning all!

I've never had Gazpacho, but think I would like a small amount of it for a taste.  I salute miners and mitten trees, agree with the quote, and our Grand Australia/NZ will go to Waitangi not Russel.  But we have a tour booked that will cruise to Russel.

Yesterday we finished packing a 3rd bag for Luggage Forward to pick up.  That takes care of the bulk of what we're bringing but we probably still will fill a couple more.  The pick-up is next week, we should be ready by then.

Happy Birthday @Cat in my lap!

Good morning, Dailyites.  Happy Birthday, @Cat in my lap, and my prayers for all those with worries and cares.  Cheers to those cruising!

We visited New Zealand on the old Statendam, many years ago.  Our stop in the Bay of Islands included a visit to a glowworm cave and a kauri forest.  Then we had a couple of weeks driving around NZ and spent a few days in Paihia, when we visited Waitangi and Russell.  We took the ferry to Russell and wandered around, including a visit to the  Duke of Marlborough Hotel, where we had a meal in the pub, and Pat discovered the bartender was from a town in Ireland near where he grew up.  Small world...

Good afternoon. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

I'm not a gazpacho fan. Miners have been important, especially here in W.PA where coal mining still goes on. I haven't seen Mitten trees, but people put mittens/gloves on fences with tags saying they are free, for those who are in need of a way to keep warm. Deep quote. I like chicken tortilla soup from a local restaurant here, but haven't made it myself. Pass on the drink and yes to the wine. I haven't been to Russell, Bay of Islands. 2 important days in history.

It's cloudy and 30's here, with occasional snow showers (not sticking). I had someone come by this AM to look at the LR floor. I won't know anything for a week or so. Last night around 11PM I got notified of a new test result. The MRI! It's a convoluted report. First it says there was some motion which affected the test. I held as still as possible, despite terrible pain. Maybe my breathing was too deep, as I tried to calm myself. There's lots of degenerative disease, with compression of L4 on the right. Surprisingly there are several new synovial cysts, as well as the known facet disease. So which is the culprit I don't know. I guess I'll find out when I see the Neurosurgeon. Meanwhile, another night with only about 2.5 hours of sleep.

@Cat in my lap Happy Birthday!

@StLouisCruisers Congrats to FC Dallas on their win and to Ren for his 2 assists.

@kazu I'm glad Ivan's injection is done for the month. I hope physio isn't too painful today. Jake's birthday was in November.

@aliaschief Good news that your back is feeling better.

@cruising sister That's good that you got vacation override for most of your meds.

@Cruzin Terri Maybe the blood work that the rheumatologist orders for the PMR will shed some light on the cause of your fatigue. Are you still on Prednisone? Sometimes decreasing the dose too fast can cause fatigue. I hope the Neurologist can help DH.

@smitty34877 Hopefully only 1-2 days of that noise!

@ottahand7 Sorry to hear that John has shingles, but getting on an antiviral med should significantly lessen the course. I hope it's not too painful.

@dfish Drain cleanout duty, ugh. Wow about River's Mother, but it sounds like she'll be with people who are much more caring than her Mother. Thanks for the recipes.

@marshhawk Sorry to hear of Chuck's test results and the need for an angioplasty. I hope the infusion goes well today.

@rafinmd Great sign.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Thanks for the lovely photos.

@Vict0riann Thanks for sharing your photos.

Prayers for the Care List and Cheers to those Celebrating.

This is what I posted on February 9, 2022.  We have been to the Bay of Islands once on the Volendam on the APEX cruise in 2002.  I posted a few pictures when Whangarei was the port last August.  Since we tendered into Paihia near Waitangi, I will post the pictures I didn't share then.

It was cloudy in the morning when we arrived, but by the afternoon the clouds had burned off and it was a glorious day.  Once off the tender, we walked around town checking the sites and things to do.  We booked a boat tour for the afternoon and took a private drive in the country with one of the locals before the boat trip.

These are pictures of town in the morning and in the afternoon.

A few pictures from our drive in the country including a stop at Haruru Falls.  We were lucky that it was in November and there was water flowing over the falls.

Good morning everyone and Happy Wednesday. I like gazpacho but rarely make it. I’ve only seen mitten trees in pictures. I think miners have tough jobs. I like chicken tortilla soup but have never made it. The best I’ve ever had was in Bahia de Kino, Mexico.

I forgot to mention that I saw the eye surgeon on Monday and she said I was doing good and okayed the surgery on the other eye. She had a student with her and was explaining my lens correction, saying that I was a -10 and that I was 20/20 now because of the specialty lens. Yay!

Happy Birthday @Cat in my lap!  Enjoy your special day!

Debbie @dfish, thank goodness you and Sue and the other grandma are in River’s life!

Rich @richwmn, wow!  Your cruise is creeping up. Will you be posting a Live From thread?

Lenda @Quartzsite Cruiser, I just found out our ladies group are going to Waco the first weekend in May. One of the ladies actually lives there and is hosting. We usually get together in November but this is for her big seven zero birthday so May it is. I’m excited. So, my question, what is the weather like at that time of year?  I’m planning on flying into Waco so I don’t have to drive from Dallas. I guess American is the only airline that goes there.

Have a great day!

Wow Sharon on the -10 to 20/20. I thought I was bad with a -4 in one eye and -5 in the other. You will be so thrilled once the other eye is done. Make sure you get the eye glasses needed restriction removed from your drivers licence. I am of course assuming that Arizona licences can have restrictions like ours in Ontario.

Wow, thank you for the suggestion!  I never thought about that, and yes, AZ has that restriction too. Yes, it’s a little strange for me going to no glasses after wearing them since I was 6 years old. I sort of feel naked.

I know what you mean. I was 8 when I started wearing glasses. My eye doctor took a copy of my drivers licence and they will send the form in.

Got out to a grocery store today, glad I had the energy. It feels cold here but it’s not raining or snowing.
Have a webinar soon on glaucoma surgeries, hoping it’s encouraging.

Blessing to all in need. Happy birthday @Cat in my lap !
Love both gazpacho and tortilla soup!  Have had miners in the family, brutal work!  Most died too young. As a geologist I visited mines in PA and MI, fascinating but brutal!

Happy Wednesday!  Don't know if I've ever had Gazpacho, the chicken tortilla soup sounds good!  A few years ago I made some hats for a "giving/mitten" tree.  I was worried they might not be warm enough, but then I looked at the kiddos waiting for the bus around here...jackets not zipped, no hats or mittens and some wearing shorts even in the winter!😉

Happy Birthday to @Cat in my lap

@dfishSorry to hear about River and her family situation, it's very good to know that she has some stable people in her life that can watch out for her.  It's so sad when children are so disrupted because of their parents.

Prayers for all that need them, and cheers to the others, thanks for all of the caring and sharing!

Today was Reading Buddies day, I only got coughed on a few times today!  The room didn't have as much coughing going on today...YAY!  I was going to wear a mask, but forgot...next week is the last week till after Christmas!

Have a good afternoon, Karen

The guys stayed inside the car, but my friend and I just couldn't, so we got out and enjoyed the beautiful sight as the train went by playing carols loudly as it passed.  After we got home, we learned that the son of dear departed friends of ours was the engineer on it - we know his parents would have been so proud of him.  Here's a photo - not mine, as I left my phone in the car, but it's what the train looked like, all decked out for the season.

That is so wonderful you got to see it, Gerry.  I used to when it came to my old home town and really enjoyed it.  What a small world it is that your DD friends’ son was the engineer on it.  That would be quite the honour and a wonderful job, I think.  I am sure his parents would be very proud ❤️

@kazu I'm glad you didn't have too much trouble with Ivan at the vet - hopefully he'll get accustomed to the monthly visits.

We don’t go the vet, Gerry.  They come to us.  All Ivan’s injections and check ups are done at home (unless it is an emergency).  There’s a cost but it’s worth.  I used this vet when Marley’s cancer affected his shoulder and he couldn’t get in the SUV.  He hated the vet clinic and never knew he saw a vet when they came 😉. Ivan hadn’t seen a vet in 5 years so I felt this was the way to go.

He just doesn’t like the scale - it’s not very big  - but, honestly most of my dogs didn’t like the scales - even the big ones at the vet clinic.  The only one that went on easily was Kazu.   He would do anything for food.  LOL.

I completed my Christmas cards yesterday!

We were preparing for leaving for a 2 day casino trip to New Buffalo by the Indiana border which is popular with Chicago visitors in the summer when John showed me a rash on his stomach.  He has shingles I am 99% sure.   I have always told him if you get a rash or tingle to let me know ASAP.   Thank goodness it was on the front so he noticed it.  My company that I worked as a sales manager for many years developed both drugs needed for the treatments for shingles acyclovir and valacyclovir so I know shingles treatment inside and out.   I told him let me know ASAP as I have a stash of valacyclovir for cold sores.  He has already taken one dose and has a call into his doctor to get an Rx.  We will go forward with hour trip and celebrate an early birthday dinner at their steak house.   We lucked out on the weather, this time of year that area is prone to large snow squalls as it is right at Lake Michigan.    Have a lovely day everyone!   Nancy

Wow - thank heavens you had your eye out for shingles 😥. I am glad it was caught in time to get John the antivirals.  I hope he doesn’t suffer too much and can recover quickly 🤞

I can get a lot further down the drain with this than I could with the hand operated one, so we'll see how long this clean out lasts.  We've had the drain specialists out several times since we moved in.  I figure I can do at least half as good as they do.  We'll just do a snake job once a month to keep things clear.  It is a nasty job.

Wow!  I admire you for taking on this job.  Not a nice one at all.  Is this going to have to be done forever?

We're trying to figure out how to work things for my surgery.  We will have River then.  Unfortunately, her mother violated her probation and is looking at a lengthy time in jail.  River is with her other grandma for now.  I am actually kind of glad as River will be in a more stable environment while her mother is up the river.  I wouldn't mind if she's there for a good, long time.  I think it would be better for River.

I hope you can figure things out so that all is good for you with the surgery and River.  I hate to say it, but from the sounds of things it’s best if her mother is there for a very long time.  It doesn’t sound like she should have River at all 😔.  This will be very good for River I am sure you.  Bless you and Sue for helping her so much ♥️

@ger_77Chuck is probably not feeling much better than yesterday.  He seems quite low on oxygen and has been using my tank, both last night and evening.  I think he may have been under a bit too long.  They did find more blockage during the  test yesterday, and he is scheduled for an angioplasty again in January.  But they never ask before they schedule, and we get home and see the calendar and have to reschedule, as they scheduled for a day he has an infusion.

Oh dear, Annie.  I am sorry to hear about Chuck.  Certainly sounds like he is having a tough time and I am concerned that you are not getting the oxygen you need 😬. I hope he improves and is feeling better soon.  It’s a long time until January 😔

We will snake the drain on a regular basis.  It beats paying $100+ every other month to have the sewer people come do it.  They can't find any major defect.  We had them go down with the camera the last time.  No idea why this is happening, but I'll put on my work clothes and gloves and snake the drain on the 1st of every month.  We'll have the auger paid for in no time.

My mother in law (Momma Norma)  raised her great grandaughter (Hailey) when her granddaughter went off to the slammer.  I will not say that Hailey is a kind, nice or a caring young lady.  She is smart (but lives on the stupid side..plans no future) very pretty, and conniving.  (How to steal from Momma's hand bag).  Now is this her fault?  Probably not, Momma never wanted her to do without.  So she has everything, and values nothing.

@dfishI have always thought that you and Sue offer this child the most calm and trusted household. Will she be with you and be able to attend school in your location?  Stay for months and find a stable environment?  I am hoping so.  Of course it will change your lives, but to be able to change hers would be the greatest gift you can give her.

@kazuDH says he feels like words I cannot say here.  I am taking off working tonight to keep him company, fix a real dinner, and make sure he gets some rest.  He never feels well after the infusions, but add on what he went through yesterday, and it's pretty bad.

Me resting.  Dream on.  The pace of doctor's visits, calls, and error fixing is anything but restful.  For the next 3 weeks:

Thursday: Podiatrist

Friday: Primary doctor

Then:

Monday: Pet scan (presumably)

Wednesday: Cardiologist

And :

Tuesday: Labs and dentist

Thursday: Bone density scan.

I say presumably because the radiologist practice wants me to do a checkin in advance.  They sent me a link to do so as a text on my cell phone.  My phone cannot do internet.  I called back this morning and they promised to email me the link.  Nope:  20 minutes later I got another text.  I went to their "Contact us" email and repeated the request including the crux of the dilemma in all caps but 20 minutes later another text.  Not sure if there's a way to get through to them but I hope the radiologists are more caring than the schedulers.

Good afternoon after a busy day.  The last load was washed this morning, and now the washer will have a few day's rest.  The Christmas cards are finished and ready to mail tomorrow.  I was hoping to get outside and wash the car, and I may try to when I finish here.  I can always

do the computer work in the morning while it's still chilly outside.

The assistant to the F&B manager found me and apologized for the bad lobster. I now have a complimentary dinner in PG. They really followed up and really made sure things were made right. I was very impressed with the resolution. 👍

today is Oranje Night and I will be doing the Pub Crawl!!

Thoughts for the care list and cheers for those celebrating. Happy Birthday to @Cat in my lap

Have a great day everyone!

Pennie, I'm happy you got a good resolution after the bad lobster.

Carolyn, I'm glad the packing is getting done, and most of what you plan to take is ready to ship.

Lovely photos Lenda.

Very nice of you to share especially to those of us who have never been.

Graham, thank you for your kind words.  I hope you and Pauline can get to New Zealand and Australia.  They are very interesting countries.

Sharon, the weather in May is generally pretty good.  It is warming up by the first weekend in May, but it is still in the rainy part of the year.  I would suggest warm weather clothes, but some layers and a light jacket for cooler mornings and evenings.  Just keep in mind that Texas weather is very unpredictable.  AA is the only airline that serves Waco, with I think two flights in and out a day from DFW, so you won't miss Dallas completely.  At least, you will miss the drive.  I think you will enjoy Waco.

Oh no! Medical emergency! Captain just came on and said the ship.is speeding up for a critically ill person and asking for a blood donation!

We are hoping to be in Curacao by 2am.

Please Daily-ites PRAY for this person!

Joy, what a horrible thing to have happen to anyone on a cruise.  I hope the patient will be all right and get the medical attention they need.

I think we've got a handle on things.  River will be very good with me when I come home, I know.  She loves to come here and I think it is because of the calmness and security we offer her.  I asked her once who her best friend was and she said me and her grandmother.

How scary on a ship.  My heart is with the ill passenger.

@Sharon in AZ You'll be all new for Hawaii.  Perfect timing!

Debbie, the home repairwoman, did a bang up job on the under cabinet lights and they are now all working!   Two new transformers and new light bulbs and we're in business.

Debbie, I'm betting that River will be a good "nurse" to you after your surgery.  Congratulations on fixing the under cabinet lights.  I don't envy you cleaning out the drain every month.

Annie, I hope your DH feels better soon.

Me resting.

Roy

Roy, I'm betting the schedulers don't know how to override the automatic notification system, and aren't thinking about creating an email.  I hope all you appointments go well, and you can get some rest.
