I have a container because someone gave it to me.  Still unopened.

I have hand sanitizer to use when my power is out (well pump, so no water).

Just used it last Thursday / Friday since power was out for 20 hours.  😞

To me, the pillow is one of the nastiest things in the room.  Many people have drooled/breathed on the same pillow you are using.  Sure it has a pillow case, but unless that pillow case is airtight (it's not), there's a lot of germs escaping the pillow every time you put your head on it.

I’ll see your ‘disgust with drooled-on pillows,’ and one-up you this:

Never, but it might be the new normal, wipe down the room with wipes, and tell the room attendant you dont want them in the room.  Towels and sheets could be exchanged by leaving them outside the door (when you see the attendant in the hallway, say hey I am putting my towels out please replace, i  will bring them in the room myself) etc....

We wipe down the drawers and storage cabinets too .  Then leave them open to air out for a little while .

Dirty socks and underwear could have been residing in those drawers a few hours before we got there .

We do the same for the same reason.

Yes with the hospital grade hydrogen peroxide wipes that are supposed to kill Norovirus.  Have done this for years in ships, hotels and planes.  Prefer to wash my hands but there are times when that is not an option, so always have hand sanitizer.  Will not change one way or the other once we get back to cruising.  I've worked in a middle school for the last 25 years and hand sanitizer is a staple to our staff.  I should really probably be immune to most anything by now 🙂

I confess if it was up to me it wouldn't get done but DW brings wipes, spray, and hand gel. First day the cabin gets wiped and sprayed. I usually step out on the balcony or else I'll get sprayed too. If sanitizer and/or disinfectant were a C&A gift, it'd be on her list but that's only because their wine selection sucks. We've never been sick on a ship but we've been through Noro protocols and she works in a rehab unit in a nursing home.

LOL, that is why I always bring pillows from home in a vacuum bag, and leave them behind after the cruise, they can toss them out with the trash.

Good idea!  People seem more concerned about touching utensils in the buffet than they do about putting their head on something that contains who knows what, for several hours each night.

Hmm.  Towels are placed in the corridor FLOOR.  How is this better better than the room steward placing them directly in your cabin?

Put me in the camp that I am not going to start wiping down my cabin.  In everyday life do you wipe down EVERYTHING you touch outside your home?

On the plane home from Chile in March was the first time we wiped anything down.  Wife had wipes and did all the seats and tray table.  I’m from the school of you build your immune system by exposure to germs and your immunity system does not develop as well if you are constantly using hand sanitizer and wipes.

May feel a little different about Covid 19, but agree with this guy

Well that explains it. She's not a germaphobe. It comes second nature to her.

Well I bring a pillow case to the buffet to get enough bacon.

I forget the total context of the conversation (so that must be clear) however in general i would say I dont need some sick room steward coughing in my room, just put my clean towels in  a bag and leave them outside the door.

He makes so much sense.  I never have been a germaphobe and hopefully never will.  Not specifically talking about Covid, but people just don't understand the damage they do to their immune systems by the overuse of antibacterials and antibiotics.

We clean everything in the cabin that we will be touching, remote control, door handles, coffee maker ,safe, etc, We never put underwear directly in drawers. We bring plastic bags for our underwear. We thoroughly check the bedding for bed bugs.

We clean everything with Lysol several times a day for every day on the cruise.

We have been doing this for 25 years.

In the restaurants we smell beverages served to us because at times the glass is not clean.

We never use fingers to press elevator buttons. We take Purell with us in the Casino and on shore excursions.

Wow!!

just as a way of life, we have always wiped down our TV changer, telephone, all the handles, knobs etc....it is just what we do.  people all don't live the same way, or have the same measures of cleanliness.....it is just what it is

I don't understand the fear of the pillow.

Even if the person on the cruise before you was sick, unless the pillow is literally dripping with some form of infectious bodily fluid, you're not going to catch a disease from them through the pillowcase.  Of all the possible fomites in the room, a pillowcase-covered pillow is pretty low on my list.

And I'm a bit of a germophobe myself (also an RN), but I've never wiped down anything in the room.  Diligent hand hygiene is second nature to me, and pretty much any disease you're gonna catch on a cruise ship is going to be one you put in your mouth or on your face with your own two hands.

As always... CLICK HERE FOR THE BEST WAY to avoid catching a contagious illness.

I expect to be chased by villagers with pitchforks soon for posting that!  LOL

Actually, I used to roll my eyes at that little jingle.  If nothing else, this pandemic has raised awareness about the importance of hand washing and also keeping hands free from the face.  Seems too simple to be effective but eye-rolling no more!  Bring on the cute jingles!
