Anyone know what creosote smells like?

maybe talking about this rather than the plant

a dark brown oil distilled from coal tar and used as a wood preservative. It contains a number of phenols, cresols, and other organic compounds.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that coal tar is carcinogenic to humans and that creosote is probably carcinogenic to humans. EPA has also determined that coal tar creosote is a probable human carcinogen.

I passed a creosote treatment plant on my way to school for 2 years. Although I can't describe the smell, I would recognize it immediately.

@AncientWanderer I love the statement about things in threes - I'm going to share that with my daughter to give her hope that this is IT for a while!

Most especially, my thanks to everyone for the good thoughts and hopes for my son-in-law.  Despite his long history with medical professionals due to his health challenges, he absolutely hates taking any medicines.  My daughter has tried to convince him that fever reducers, decongestants and talking to a doctor about the antiviral might help, he resists...at least for him the headache is gone.  Congestion remains, but he says his breathing is fine.  He's sleeping a lot and we hope that is allowing his body to use energy to heal.

I am loving all the photos of Paris - thank you all for sharing!!

Good Afternoon, Dailyites!

A beautiful but sticky day here in Central Florida.  "Auntie Kay" is on doggie detail for neighbor's Goldendoodle for the day 😍😃 while starting to pack for next week's cruise.

Thanks to all who contribute/lurk/whatever here -- such a friendly place.  Cheers to those on the celebrations list and hugs to those on the care list.

When I went back into my cruise history, I found that we have been to LeHavre 6 times.  Did something different each time, too!  Will break this up into more than one post.

The first time was April 24, 2009, Grand Princess TA from FLL to Southampton.  Of course, being the first time we had to visit the Normandy beaches on a ship tour.

First stop was a museum in Arromanches-les-Bains - very interesting and they actually still thank all the visitors who are citizens of Allied countries for saving them.

Lunch was at Omaha Beach Golf club

Second visit was an overnight November 19 to 20, 2012.  Celebrity Constellation Immersive Wine Cruise round trip Southampton.  Celebrity offered a Paris on your own tour that bussed us into Paris early on the 19th and picked us up on the 20th for the return to LeHavre.  We and another couple jumped on this opportunity and had a brief but wonderful 2 days.

It was "red nose days" in Paris

They also had the Christmas market set up

Dinner at a restaurant around the corner from the hotel -- no one spoke English, we didn't speak French, but a great time was had by all.  The owner took a shine to DH 😉

And thanks to @bennybear, @AncientWanderer, @Cruising-along, @kazu, @Quartzsite Cruiser, and @VictOriann for all the suggestions and comments about Taormina on yesterday’s Daily. I have decided to cancel the tour for myself, although Craig might still go. I checked Cruise Mapper and it looks like we will tender to Naxos. Right now there aren’t any transfers listed from Naxos to Taormina but I’m sure they supply a shuttle service of some kind.

Sharon, the bus we took was not provided by the ship or the port of Naxos.  It was Interbus which is a bus service connecting towns in Sicily.  We got the bus about two blocks from the tender dock in Naxos and it dropped us off at the bus station in Taormino.  The station is down the hill from the gate to the old walled city, but it was not a hard walk up the hill.  When we were ready to head back to Naxos, we waited at the bus station for the correct bus.  You might want to add a few minutes in case you have to wait on the correct bus back to Naxos.

Here are a couple of links to Interbus and BusBud, which should give you more information.  The cost is not bad either.

This one I had trouble getting it to translate into English

https://www-interbus-it.translate.goog/?_x_tr_sl=it&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=sc

https://www.busbud.com/en-ca/bus-schedules-results/sqdz5r/sqdz7g?outbound_date=2022-05-20&adults=1

This is a picture of the bus.

The creosote used as a preservative is one I also recognize, but I don't think I could describe it either.  Once you have smelled it, you will know what it is the next time.  I don't really remember a distinctive small from the creosote plants around Quartzsite.

It’s our last full day of what has been a wonderful vacation. Yesterday it rained most of the day and today has started off with gray skies.

Tonight we will dine out as we have used up all our planned meals.

Tomorrow we fly direct to Oakland and will stay a couple of days with our son and family before flying home Monday.

Roy, I do hope you have a great cruise and thanks to all our Daily subscribers.

Hello everyone.   I am trying to get caught up.  We had no phone therefore no hotspot inside our cabin.  The phone worked well enough outdoors where I found one spot where I had a signal so I could call Direct TV to reset our receiver.  At least the TV worked.  I will have to sign up for the internet that GM sells so we have wifi and use the phone outdoors.   DF's phone had some 5G service last year, this year no service.   On top of that while we were loading and unloading 2 lawn tractors in the woods he lost his phone and we couldn't find it.

The cabin opening went smoothly other than the 1000 or so dead flies that are an every year event.   I have decided insect bombs inside before we leave are useless.  The 5 mile logging road we take to the cabin was the driest and smoothest ever thanks to logging along it last fall.   We had a brisk wind to unload the truck so no black flies.   We are back home, resting up from the drive and cabin opening and will head up next week.  Here are some pics from our drive from MI Lower Peninsula to the Upper, US 2 along Lake Michigan and Spring Beauties covering the forest floor.

@smitty34877, Camilla is quite the big girl now! What a sweetie.

Very happy to see she is progressing well.

Received my 2nd booster yesterday, today I woke up with a headache and my shot site arm is sore.

Nothing else really, lucky me.

Hello to everyone here.

Stay safe and take care. 😊

Day 2 of overnight in Paris (11/20/2012).  We did the ho-ho bus tour and saw all the usual suspects, Louvre, Eiffel tower, Notre Dame (all of which have already been shared).  We also passed the Moulin Rouge.

@kb4683 WOW!  Thank you for the pictures!  The mussels and the crepes look just like the perfect lunch.

@smitty34877 What a cutie Little Miss Camilla is, and those eyes!  I bet you can't wait to see her in person.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Thank you for the bus information to Taormina.  I'll save that so I can reference it later.

There definitely is a creosote smell after a rain, especially a monsoon.  I can't describe it but I guess musky, earthy will suffice.  But it just smells "fresh".  And yes, we Tucsonans do love it, it not only smells good but reminds us that the dry parched desert will survive.  I certainly wouldn't like a wine smelling like that though.  😉

It was so nice to see an updated picture of Miss Camilla.  Thank you @smitty34877 Terry.

I remember how Miss Camilla's progress kept many of us going and giving us hope during dark times of the pandemic.  She was an inspiration to all of us.

Thanks to all who keep The Daily a high spot everyday. Prayers for all, especially the Covid-19 cases, may they be minor rather than major cases. The pictures of Paris tempt me to change my thoughts for our Paris (Honfleur) stop next month and travel to Paris but family in France tell us that Honfleur is a city worth wandering. Thanks for the good thoughts and responses for our 48th anniversary. Love hearing how young we look! Thank you.

Honfleur is very “posh,” with excellent restaurants, bakeries, shops.  It’s a holiday spot for the French and a great option if you don’t want the long day to Paris.

Here’s a photo of my scrapbook page for Honfleur.  They aren’t good photos, but might give more idea of the feel of the place.

I'm back from depositing my paycheck and buying gas for the car, since I'm driving to Newark Airport tomorrow. Buying gas was daunting but I got $0.20/gallon off at the supermarket.

The cat-sitter and I finally talked on the phone and that is set up. It's hard to reach her during the day because she's walking dogs, scooping litter boxes, and feeding the various pets; I had tried text messaging but it turns out that the number I have is a land line.
