Good morning, everyone!

It will be a sunny day here in mid-Michigan with temperatures in the mid 50s.  Still lots of boxes to get through.  I may add to the trash pile that previous owners left out front.  I need to check to find out when the big item trash removal is so that I know how to time my donations.  Trash day is on Friday with recycles on the third Friday.

I love chili, but would pass on the cornbread.  Normally I am not a fan, but the time I hiked Grand Canyon I certainly appreciated it.  We  hiked down the Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch where we camped for the night.  We had made arrangements for dinner at Phantom Ranch and they served beef stew (don't care for it) with cornbread (not my favorite) and coleslaw (ok by me).  It was all so good I had seconds.  I think what I liked is that I didn't have to pack the food in and I didn't have to pack the leftovers and refuse out.

I think this would be a great dinner for a busy family on a crisp fall day.

For our first recipe we have an offering from Reese Witherspoon.  https://www.delish.com/cooking/a23891306/reese-witherspoons-corn-bread-chili-pie-recipe/  It looks really easy, especially since it uses a boxed cornbread mix.

I'd like this next one with the jalapeños in the cornbread.  I like a bit of heat.    https://emeals.com/recipes/recipe-40874-261435-Chili-Pie-with-Cornbread-Crust

This next one put cheddar cheese on the cornbread.  It looks really nice!

Take care, everyone.  It is wonderful being connected again.

Glad you are back up and running. I am sure it will be a relief when all your boxes are unpacked! We haven’t moved in 52 years, almost 53 but have helped one daughter move once and the other one move three times. Enough for me! Enjoy your new home and being closer to family.

Thank you Melanie.

I get arthritis pain in hips, knees and feet every day but fortunately i have a high pain threshold.

My late mam had both her knees replaced with one of them done twice.

Her sister and my brother have both had hip replacement.

Graham.

I guess you are lucky to have a high pain threshold.   My mum had her hip replaced several years ago and she was up and about pain free within days.  She's in her mid 80's now and still going!

That is great and reassuring news about your mam.

Thank you Sandi.

Sorry to hear you have lower back issues.

Did your numbness clear on your brow after your Moh's surgery a few months ago?

Graham

No, the numbness is still there.  In fact in addition to numbness I had some painful spots when pressed in the last few weeks.  So I guess I should just not press on my head!🤪

Mohs surgery was Feb. 21 so 8 1/2 months have passed.

@grapau27I had both hips replaced almost 40 years ago, one year apart. They are as good as new today. No regrets.

@StLouisCruisers That little cove is called Lovers Breach.  We spent 2 weeks vacations twice in close San Jose and spent time on that lovely spot.

That is fantastic news.

I'm delighted for you and that is very helpful information.

Good Monday morning!   I can't hug a bear today as I have a teddy at the cabin and not here.   After having squamous  cell cancer on my face  with ensuing Mohs surgery I am really aware to use sunscreen and I have a very large sun hat I carry when we travel to the Caribbean.   A great quote, music is such an important part of many of our lives.  @StLouisCruisers and @lindaler I love looking at the Fleet Report watching the Volendam heading West towards Fort Lauderdale.    The excitement is building for our upcoming cruises for sure.  @lindalerthanks for the information about our final packet for our cruise is still awaited so I don't have to worry I missed ours.  We are calling the Luggage Direct today for our bag pickup so we can tick that off from our lists.   Terry and Graham, I am sorry to hear that hip replacements are in your future.  On a good note my DH had both knees replaced at once and I did a couple of the post surgery group classes with him and the therapist said hip replacements are easier than knees.  Still no piece of cake.

Today's chili pie recipes look wonderful.  Debbie I am glad you are getting settled into your new home.  The cocktail looks like another one for sitting around the pool on a BHB.   The wine looks good too, I used to love Malbec but I guess my tastes have changed but this one could be a winner if it could be found.   Sandi thanks for the photos of Cabo.

Prayers for all on our care list and the people of Ukraine.    Happy wishes to all on cruises now or soon to be.  I will head to see my DB in about an hour then come home and do some garden work.  We have a few good days this week I never thought in early October we might have one more 70 degree day in November.    We are heading to New Buffalo again tomorrow.  DF keeps getting free nights at the casino hotel, I know he spends a fortune in their specialty steak house and I think he may gamble a wee bit more than he owns up to.    It will be a beautiful drive through the countryside on sunny days.  Have a wonderful day!

Definitely late to the party today.   Nice selection of days today, especially Cancer Awareness Day.  Interesting quote by Nietzsche.  I've been to Cabo several times and expect most of us have as well.  I'll pass on the meal.  My alternative is a hot dog, as enjoyed yesterday, not for the culinary excellence but for the setting at the cafe in Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, Florida.

Good morning from sleepless near Seattle!  I guess it will take a few days to readjust to west coast time.  My body wants to wake up at 4 or 5 in the morning and I cannot get back to sleep.  So there will be a nap in my future today!

Cancer Awareness is near and dear to my heart.  My dear sister passed away at age 68 from an aggressive form of Lymphoma.  I have many teddy bears to hug, but will pass on hugging a real bear (as cute as the babies are!) The meal sounds good to try, but I'm not a real fan of cornbread.  It wrecks havoc with my blood sugar anyway.  The drink sounds good too, but will pass on the red wine.  I don't think I've been to the port of the day.

Our delayed bags finally arrived late yesterday afternoon.  We haven't started unpacking yet, but they look fine on the exterior.  Grocery shopping has been done, and I got outside to clean up the mess that the windstorm left in our yard.  That tree through my neighbor's roof looks even more frightening up close.  Another neighbor down the road also got a tree down on their house. They had just bought the house a few months ago and had a new roof put on....  😞

Prayers for all on the care list and a big hurrah for all who are celebrating!

Good morning from a foggy, damp, dreary central Texas.  We are supposed to have thunderstorms this afternoon.  Since the weather is bad and the roads are wet, I'm staying home to day and catching up on some computer chores.

I'm late this morning, but I did get at least 7 1/2 hours sleep last night.  Still need more of those kind of nights.  After I woke up, I just lazed around catching up on the news.  I also had to take care of a canceled order from the hardware store.  The website said they had it in stock, but later I found it had to come from the warehouse.  It turns out, the national chain had discontinued the item.  However, when I called our local store, I learned for $10 more, I could get the exact same thing in black.  This time the store is ordering it, and I should be able to pick it up Wednesday.

I've only read part of the Daily, but I'm going to repost my pictures of Cabo San Lucas from May 14, 2021, and then finish reading the Daily.

We have been to Cabo San Lucas many times, but most were before digital cameras and before Cabo changed from a sleepy, little fishing village that had cruise ships stop occasionally.  The first time we were there was 1995, and difference in the town between then and our last time is unbelievable.  The big tender pier was not there, nor were most of the shops surrounding the harbor.

The last time we were there was in 2016 on the Ruby Princess.  These are the only digital pictures I have.  We stopped there in 2014 on the Veendam, but evidently, I did not take any pictures.

Looking at town from the ship.

Cabo Wabo, one of the few places that were there in 1995, but it is a lot bigger now.

Two more from the late 1990s and early 2000s.  Senior Frog was at a different location as late as 2001.

I also posted these pictures from 2016 about our tour to Todo Santos.  It's a nice little town and easy to reach from Cabo.

In 2016 on the Ruby Princess, we actually stopped twice in Cabo since we were doing b2b2bs.  The first time, we were in port from 7am to 2pm, and we took a tour to Todo Santos.  We'd always wanted to see the town, and even started to drive there once when we rented a car in Cabo.  Back then the road was a narrow, two lane highway, so we made it about halfway before turning back because we did not want to miss the ship.

By 2015, the road was a very new, very nice four lane highway, so it did not take as long to get to Todo Santos.  The highway runs from Cabo to La Paz where it connects with Highway 1 back to the US.  They run tours from Cabo and La Paz to Todo Santos.  I thought I'd add some pictures of Todo Santos, a very clean town, at least the part we saw.  It is one I'd recommend visiting if you have a chance.

IIFC, this is their museum, but I don't have pictures inside.

Which brings us to the hotel, where we had a very early lunch that was delicious.  The hotel was not the one in the Eagles song "Hotel California".

Back on the ship as we headed toward San Pedro, a picture of the houses facing the Pacific Ocean on the other side of the hill behind Cabo.  We drove through the area when it was first being developed.  It has really grown.

No way am I hugging any bears, except maybe a teddy bear if one comes my way. The Junior Cat was frightened by a bear in the back garden soon after we moved into this house and still checks (through the window) for them. In the winter, when black bears are hibernating, she checks for polar bears since they could hide in the snow.

I haven't been to Cabo San Lucas and I'm unlikely to take a cruise that would call there.

My organization's rummage sale is next Sunday and Monday and I'm expecting a difficult week because the volunteers who run in are prone to panicking about anything and everything. Their latest idea is that the want an all-day police presence, which is not going to happen. I'm expecting an uproar at the end of the week about not having enough boxes for customers to pack their purchases in, because they broke down and recycled a heap of boxes last week. In the meantime I have to figure out whether an oldish 20-inch TV that I want to donate works. I can't tell whether the problem is with the TV or the remote control, but changing the batteries in the remote control didn't help.

Good morning everyone.  Thanks for the daily report, recipes and lists.  Cancer awareness is so important, glad it has a day.  Won’t be hugging any bears.  The quote sounds like silent disco to me!  The meal suggestion and drink suggestions sound very tasty!  I haven’t been to today’s port but I hope to some day.  Prayers for everyone on our prayer list.  Cheers to everyone celebrating happy events today!

Today is National Cancer Awareness Day,

Thank you for the fleet report, I always find it very informative.

We are very aware of the toll cancer takes on so many people.

I had a chunk of my tongue removed last year because of cancer cells and my wife underwent radiation therapy.

Our niece died of brain cancer at the age of 41, her brother had a large growth removed from his brain but survived.

Our neighbor's daughter died of leukemia at the age of 22.

For us, every day is cancer awareness day.

Best wishes and prayers to all in need.  Glad to see Roy made it safely down to Florida.  Graham — hope your hip situation continues to be manageable for many years to come.

DH’s oral surgery is at 4 today.  Not very simple given the amount of meds he is on and his diabetes.  This will be about a 5 week healing period.  I already went shopping for foods he may be able to eat.

Last day of beautiful weather here in southeastern PA.  Tomorrow will be a good day to stay in and watch election predictions and then results — in a timely manner, I hope.

Have a great day, everyone.  Katherine

Long time not posting from me.  I posted a couple of times from the American Star, but haven't since I got home.  Arrived in Denver, and the next morning my friend tested positive.  So, I got on the bus and hurried home (masked).  The next day I woke up with a cold (and I have kept testing, and thankfully I am negative).  Between the cold and the log-in problems, this is my first time since the cruise.

I enjoyed the riverboat cruise, but will stick to HAL!  It would have to be a very special itinerary to do such a small ship/boat again.  Food was lackluster, and really not much choice.  I loved the Hudson River Valley and the sights.

My step-son with the double cancer is slowly recovering from the adrenal gland surgery.  Because of the extensive surgery, it will be 4-6 months before his kidney removal of his second cancer.  He finally is able to get out some, which is helping his attitude.  I just want him to try to keep positive, as he still has some battles to fight.  Cancer has affected my family - my DSis passed at 39 of breast cancer, my DM at 82, and I have had my bouts with basal cell.

For those with hip surgery looming, it has come a long way.  My Son-in-law just had a hip replaced and it was easy for him.  Of course he is in excellent physical condition.  My middle step-son has had 2 hip replacements.  First one at age 32 (accident), and then his second surgery at age 50.  Second one more successful than the earlier one!

I think I will wait for a Blue Hawaii drink till I get to the Hale Koa in January!  If they can't do one, I can walk next door to the Hilton Hawaiian Village!  Actually, a Mai Tai will be my first order at the Barefoot Bar.

When we first visited Cabo San Lucas in 1985 (1st HAL cruise) it was barely a "village".  I had to use my very basic high school/college Spanish to order beer for our group.  By the time we visited again in 2002, it was a booming resort community. It wasn't on our itinerary on my Panama Canal transit earlier this year.

There have been numerous bear sightings in our little town this fall.  Hope they have all gone to higher ground to hibernate and don't come around for hugs!

Have a great day everyone.

Mary Kay

Good morning again.  The fog has lifted and the sun is trying to come out.  However, the forecast is still calling for thunderstorms this afternoon.  So it's not a good time to be on the highway.  I will go in earlier tomorrow to be there for the team evaluation of DH's progress, and then to go with him to the two week post op visit with the surgeon.  Fortunately the people at rehab are arranging transportation to and from the doctor's office.

We are also aware of cancer.  My DFIL battled non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for 25 years, but it was the affects of the chemo therapy that finally caused his death.  My step-mother survive breast cancer. and my maternal grandfather died of throat cancer due to smoking many years before I was born.   I've had one basal cell cancer removed from my face and several pre-cancerous lesions frozen off, while DH had several pre-cancerous spots surgically removed this summer.

We've seen bears up close in the wild, but I never considered hugging one, and there are no stuffed ones to hug either.  I used Retinol for a few years, but either it or the soap I needed to use caused an allergic reaction.

An interesting quote by Friedrich Nietzsche.

I like chili and cornbread, but I'm not sure about combining them in one dish.  Growing up, we would have Frito pie on cold winter nights.  It was canned chili, Fritos, chopped onions mixed together, topped with grated cheese and heated in the oven.  I'll pass on the drink, but would love to try the wine.

As you saw above, we've been to Cabo San Lucas many times.  We were also their four times last fall and twice last spring on Koningsdam.  I'll post some pictures from those visits.

@grapau27  Graham, I'm sorry a hip replacement is in your future.  I hope the shots work and you can wait a while for the surgery.  We've had several neighbors who had the surgery, one even had both hips replaced at the same time.  All are doing well.

@Crazy For Cats  Jake, hope tonight's Tamarind dinner is as good as last night's.

@smitty34877  Terry, I'm sorry you are also facing hip replacement surgery.  I hope the injections will help you for quite a while.

@StLouisCruisers  Sandi, I hope your back problems don't lead to back surgery.  If it does, I strongly suggest you look into the surgery that doesn't involve using metal screws and rods.  The one DH had is less invasive and has good results.  DH's problem is not with the surgery, but with nerve damage from waiting too long due to Covid to have the surgery.  It is just taking time for the nerves to heal.  We've had two neighbors who had the same surgery by the same surgeon, and thy are doing well. It's the Karma MIS system that is fairly new.  In fact, I learned that DH's surgeon is redoing previous surgeries that used the screws and rods.  DH's problem was with L4 and L5, which is the easiest to repair.  I just wanted you to know there are other options than the traditional back surgery.  Also, our condolences to your neighbor's family and friends on his passing.  I'm glad Linda is improving.

@Cruising-along  Carolyn, I hope your can adjust to PST time soon.  It looks like the HOA may need to be more aggressive in getting those trees removed.

@Lady Hudson  Katherine, your DH will be in my thoughts today for his oral surgery.  I'm sending positive thoughts that it will go smoothly and his recovery will be smooth and healing as quickly as possible.  Dr. Lenda would prescribe ice cream and milk shakes as comfort food.  🤣

@cruzn single  Mary Kay, I'm sorry your friend tested positive, but I'm very happy you were negative.  Sorry you got a cold.  I'm glad your stepson is beginning to recover from his adrenal gland surgery, and is able to get out some.  I hope he can stay positive, as that can be a big help in recovery.

Thank you for your kind sentiments Lenda.

My hip pain is bearable it is the big lack of flexibility in the joint causing problems.

The power came back on last night a little after nine, so only around 48 hours this time.

We woke to a blanket of snow on the lawn, but none on the road. I love being able to see snow in the mountains and hills all around us, and not having to shovel. 🙂

Are you kidding, National hug a bear day. Why not include a recipe for the bear to properly prepare us after the hug.

Just remember the three things to do if you hug a bear. If it’s a brown bear, stay still, do not move. If it’s a brown bear stand tall with hands raised. If it’s a polar bear you can kiss you a__ goodby!

I try very hard not to hug a bear..... but they keep leaving calling cards in my backyard. No one ever told me I would spend my retirement pooper-scooping after a bear!!!

One last post before I start catching up on computer work.  These are the pictures from our Koningsdam cruises last fall and last spring.

I talked with one local about the change from the small fishing village we first saw in 1995 to the busy resort village with all the shops and restaurants.  He said he missed the old, small fishing village..  That one had a lot of charm.

Even though others have posted pictures of Los Arcos and Lovers Beach, I couldn't resist adding mine.  On our first visit to Cabo in 1995, we took a small boat out to circle Los Arcos.  It was fairly rough on the bay side and even rougher on the Pacific side.  DH wanted to walk on Lovers Beach.  I wisely decided to say on the boat.  DH had a hard time getting back in the boat, and I'm not sure I would have made in back in.

On November 16, 2021, I met @dobiemom on shore for a drink.  We had a good time getting to know each other better.  Because of the Daily, we already felt like we knew each other.

In March there were a lot of pelicans in the harbor.  There was also this big fella, who I think is a sealion.  He would only move when they were launching the wave runners, then would swim right back to the ramp.

The rest of the pictures are from the main street and some of the back streets, which were the main areas when we first visited Cabo.

At least, the Giggling Marlin is still there, while the Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood, and Carlos and Charlies are all gone.  I still miss Carlos and Charlies.

No, the numbness is still there.  In fact in addition to numbness I had some painful spots when pressed in the last few weeks.  So I guess I should just not press on my head!🤪

Mohs surgery was Feb. 21 so 8 1/2 months have passed.

I think the numbness is typical although "they" won't admit it. I still have some numb areas. No pain though. I am so careful about sun now - I may be overdoing it.

Good morning and thanks all!  The cornbread chili is interesting!  And I’d love a blue Hawaii!  Not sure about retinol day?   I’m far too aware of cancer, my dear aunt just diagnosed with another major one,  sadly too elderly for surgery.  Glad for good treatment personally, although I lost my DB at 30 to brain cancer.  So thankful early detection helps in most cases, particularly skin cancers.

I think bears are magnificent, but wouldn’t hug one!
