there are some islands that the legal age is 18 if that helps

the drinking age on board is 21, period.   many/most of the Caribbean Islands  the drinking age is 18 and you can imbibe in port. bear ng mood that if you ware totally wasted coming back to the ship, you could be denied boarding.

Drinking ages are determined by the closed loop port.  Thus, it is closed loop in USA, than it is 21.  It does not matter what country you came from.  Just like if someone is 18 from the USA, and goes to Europe, they can drink because the ship is closed loop from European port.

Yep....21 on ship, but on islands they can drink at 18.  My son and his friend were not 21, but were able to drink on all ports of call.  They made the best of it!

Be careful as some establishments are very lax in how they follow the laws.

 

Dominica allows sale and consumption at 16.

Haiti is 16 as well, however Labadee is 21 as far as I know.

A hard question to answer....

 

A 20 year old can drink any non-alcoholic beverage anytime/anywhere....

 

A 20 year old sailing RCL from a US Port may not drink alcoholic beverages on the ship.

 

A 20 year old might be able to drink ashore in a port depending on that country's laws...

 

The country where he is from does not affect the answer...

Labadee is 21, as that is Royal's private island so their rules apply....which is 21

What if you’re on an open loop cruise?

 

I’m on an open loop cruise, embarking in Seattle and disembarking in Vancouver (drinking age is 19). 

 

BTW, I’m pretty sure the drinking age on the ship will be 21. But I don’t think the cruise being an open or closed loop has anything to do about it.

You are correct, the RCI policy is dictated exclusively by embarkation port.

Heck, most Caribbean islands (or nearly so) the drinking age is based on if you are tall enough to get the money on the counter and grab the bottle. 😄
