Willemstad, Curacao was port of the day last time on Sept. 18, 2021 and here is a link to Rich's post that day.  What a lovely port it is!

 

We've only been to Willemstad, Curacao twice, 2016 on our Westerdam Panama Canal cruise and in 2019 on our Rotterdam Western and Southern Caribbean cruise.  Such a pretty and interesting place!  

 

From our 2016 stop I took photos from the ship just before our late departure.  They really know how to highlight their unique city.

This was my favorite color building and I had to compliment the man working on it.

 

 

This was the view from our docking spot on the Rotterdam in February, 2019.  

 

 

 

We walked across the pedestrian bridge and then it began to swing to the side to make way for a ship coming through.  It went under the taller bridge behind it first.

 

And there it goes past the Queen Emma bridge.  That's the Rotterdam in the background.

It would be great to be back in Curacao soon.  Unfortunately that is not one of the stops at the end of this cruise.  We are stopping in Aruba though after Barbados.

 

By the way, there are cases of Covid on this cruise.  One of the Ocean Bar Band is out with it so entertainment is a bit lacking.  Also a couple we met who are very careful about Covid transmission say their server at dinner is out and he is an important part of her dietary selections.  Hoping very much that they don't come down with it too.

A little while ago, I got news that another had died early this morning.  He had been ill for many years with a degenerative disease, and had been confined to bed for several months.  

 

Our first visit to Curacao on January 20, 2020, we rented a car and drove around the island.  First we headed north to Westpoint on the northwest corner of the island.  Later, we drove out to the resort area on the south end of the island.

 

I'll begin with a couple of pictures taken from the Rotterdam early that morning.

Oops!  I forgot to double check that I had all the pictures loaded before posting and CC was nice enough to post this for me.

 

The buildings are refurbished former slave quarters and the monument is commigrating the freeing of the slaves.  I like the simplicity of the monument which still manages to say a lot.

On January 26, 2020, the Rotterdam returned to Curacao on the way back to San Diego.  This day, we walked from the ship, which was docked in the channel to Queen Emma bridge and into town.  It was Sunday, so many stores were closed, but it was a pleasant day to wander.

We found this nice little open shaded area with cafes, bars, and decided it was time for a rest and a cool drink.

 

We past the clock and bells just about the time they rang at noon.  Notice the clock needs a slight adjustment.

We just thought this was cute.

 

Once back across the Queen Emma bridge, DH headed back to the ship, and I headed to the old fort that marked the entrance to the mega cruise dock.  The fort was a surprise, since it was basically a shell with modern buildings housing the typical port shops.  Only when I turned around to leave, could you see the inside of the fort wall.

Good morning. Sunny and cold. I rushed the dogs in and out quickly this morning but now the sun is shinning and we will head out again as soon as the black ice is gone. Will have to wake pups up since both are now curled up in bed. My bed.

 

Sorry to hear of the loss of the 2 fire fighters in PA. And I am truly sorry that so many of us are feeling stress and/or illness at this time. Some way the holiday time seems to compound the problems we are facing. Right now a friend and I are beginning to sort through our list of friends who may be alone at Christmas day and are planning to have a Christmas dinner at her house. She will fix the meat and veggies, I will handle desserts, beverages and breads. We will split the cost. I imagine there will be about 8 to 10 us ... we will have to see who will accept our invitation. And of course I will be dog walking both at home and at the shelter.

 

Have not been to today's destination. Tomato soup is one of my go to comfort foods. Along with grilled cheese... or sometimes I melt the cheese into the soup. Tonight I am having some turkey from the freezer and some sort of veggie...  just have not decided what. Probably whatever my hand lights on.

Good morning, 

We're having rain today and that's fine - better than ice! Today is special in our household as 44 years ago we had our son placed with us for adoption. He was a 2.5 year old red-headed ADHD child who made us parents. He's turned out to be a wonderful man who still has issues focusing but will do anything for you. I don't remember what day he became legally ours but this day is ingrained in me. 

DH is making progress and there is hope. Yesterday he stood up in the parallel bars unassisted 6 times. That's a first as he usually needs some assistance. I told him I'd bring him a Costco chocolate sundae today. 

 

We've decided to gift ourselves new appliances for Christmas to do a kitchen make-over. Yesterday I priced out fridge, dishwasher, stove and range hood at Home Depot and today I'll check one of our local stores for comparison.

Good morning all. Thanks Rich and all who contribute to make this a great place to be and provide us with so much knowledge. I have been to the port of the day, twice. Once was on the old Rotterdam and we were able to park inside the magic bridge. We were able to watch the foot bridge open several times and it was worth watching.

We spent a two week vacation on the island many years ago. Had a tour of the original Curaso  Blue liqueur factory. The ladies labeled each bottle by hand.  Amazing that liqueur starts out as shriveled oranges

It houses the Gouverneur de Rouville restaurant, which is very good. There are outdoor dinner seating on the long balcony and bar seating on the smaller one, plus an interior courtyard with more tables. Once the manager mentioned to me that most Americans seem to be in a hurry to pay their checks and leave even though, in the evening, there is nothing else to do.

Good morning from SE AZ. Not sure why but I didn’t make it to the Daily yesterday. I have some catching up to do. 
 

I was in Curaçao in 2001, shortly after 9/11, with my DM on the Zaandam. We took a trolley tour which was fun and a great way to see the area in the heat. I really want to go back and one of my canceled because of covid cruises did but we ended up booking something different. 
 

Prayers for the fallen firefighters and their families. Prayers for all who are ill— lots of illness going around, including me. My cough is better but still get tired. I’m mad at myself for not taking a covid test after Thanksgiving. Oh well, it’s too late now. 
 

I rarely make homemade tomato soup but Debbie’s recipes look so yummy. I think I’ll put the ingredients on my grocery list. Today Craig is making hamburgers. Tomorrow I’m taking DM shopping and going out to lunch. 
 

Happy Birthday to Parker @ger_77 Gerry’s DGS and to Carol’s @mamaofami DGS.  Karen @luvteaching, happy adoption placement day to you and your family and DS. I understand what you mean about it being a very special day. Our DD was placed with us on my 26th birthday and I have no idea what day it became legal.

@kazu Thanks Jacqui! Our DS has been a blessing but he sure has added a few grey hair to my head over the years. I sometimes wondered if we were going to make it through the teen years but he's turned out to be a wonderful person. He is there when we need him and he's so good with DH. He's also built the ramp outside, installed the walk-in shower and put up all the grab bars to make things safe. When I think back to that little red-headed boy who crossed the doorstep 44 years ago I'm so blessed.

@Sharon in AZ Congratulations on your adopting as well. I know it became legal in September and we were in El Centro, CA  but that's where the memory gives up. On the other hand I can detail the day they called to say we were approved and the call later that same day to say they had a little boy if we were interested (Dec.5), going to hear about him (Dec. 6) and his visit to meet us (Dec.7). This placement was when we lived in San Diego.

We have been to Willemstad twice recently and would gladly go back again! We did a Thanksgiving B2B on the Nieuw Amsterdam last year and took a sunset cruise excursion (plentiful drinks and snacks!). We visited again on the Nieuw Statendam in April '22 (met @sailingdutchy Tony and Martha on the first part of that cruise). We just wandered around town that day and did a little souvenir shopping. I bought a small Christmas ornament at the Delft store and it is proudly hanging on the tree this year -

I have been to Willemstad, on my Panama Canal cruise in late 2019. I had the worst upper respiratory thing after that cruise, and in retrospect wondered if it could have been Covid.

 

Another grey day here, upper 40's. Not much on the agenda today. I will do some decluttering. The dining room table is covered with ebay stuff, and needs to be unearthed in preparation for the holidays.

 

@lazey1 Sorry to hear about testing positive, but I'm glad it's a mild case.

Tomorrow, the doctor will remove and replace it. For that, she had to come off the high dose blood thinners she was prescribed for AFib and increased when her jugular blood clot was found.

 

Friday's procedure could be precarious. Will there be complicated bleeding? Will she have uncontrollable AFib? Will her jugular blood clot break lose?

 

At this juncture, I am drawn to pray for her medical team's wisdom and that my DSIL will be in God's tender care tomorrow -- whatever the outcome.

Our temps have moderated again, with a morning temp of only -16C which means my face won't hurt when I go outside - yay!  Today I'm having lunch with a friend and colleague who has just announced her retirement date; I'm excited to see her again and can't wait to hear her plans for the future.

I remember that iguana soup/stew from last year!!

 

Speaking of pirates I saw a few on the aft pool deck after lunch.  King Neptune and Queen Aphrodite too.  We officially crossed the Equator 4 times this trip.

To continue celebration of National Brownie Day, I just completed inhaling a huge warm fudge brownie at the Pinnacle Grill for lunch. Yum, yum !

I have been to Willemstad, on my Panama Canal cruise in late 2019. I had the worst upper respiratory thing after that cruise, and in retrospect wondered if it could have been Covid.

 

Another grey day here, upper 40's. Not much on the agenda today. I will do some decluttering. The dining room table is covered with ebay stuff, and needs to be unearthed in preparation for the holidays.

I didn't try iguana, but I did have goat at an open-air restaurant along the road to Westpunt. It doesn't taste like chicken, but you might mistake it for beef. I've eaten goat a few times in the U.S. but the goat here wasn't as good (or the preparation wasn't).

We’ve been to Curaso several times and first heard about this island from my parents when they went on their first cruise. We went twice with another friend on CC and explored on our scooters while our hubbies ran to keep us with us.

Both my girls were Brownies and then Girl Scouts.

WOW. Britney was released today from a Russian prison. Great news for her and her family.
